We had 10 digit for local that were different area codes for a long time. But 10 digit for calling a place next door is irritating when it's not already in the phone
ugh that was such a pain in the ass when I did consulting in gainesville, wasn't it weird like you'd get that annoying error if you dialed the area code for north ocala but if you didn't dial it for south ocala you got that same error, like you were dumb for not knowing where their arbitrary long distance line was.
that is one thing kids now don't appreciate how easy it is to speak with people from all over. We used to have to write a letter or make an expensive phone call. :angrypan:
No kidding. My "first love", I was like 13. A friend a year younger than me lived down the dirt road from me and his 4 cousins (all girls) from Louisiana came to visit for the entire summer. The oldest was my age and each one a year or two younger. Watching them grow up, holy shit. God blessed those gals. Anyway, I had a thing with the one my age. Mom tried to keep an eye on us, but it was hard when we were all playing kick the can after dark.
To the point, that depressing end of summer came when they left. For like 6 months we wrote letters back and forth every week. I can still remember the scent of the perfume she sprayed those letters with
"Dating" at any age was so much better before the conveniences of cell phones and the internet. Maybe it's revisionist thinking or remembering only the good about stuff from when I was a kid, but it feels like it not having our modern conveniences made such things more real and valuable than today's society where dating and relationships are almost like burner phones.
