đź“°News Russia invades Ukraine

pg. said:
If you were down in a subway all night with 3 kids while bombs rained down... and your husband was out fighting and probably not coming back, i think you might feel differently.

Huh? Those women are the ones who want to fight! Why do you purport to tell them they are wrong?

If you’d lived under a commie dictatorship you might not be so soft

And if putin feels really defeated he probably rains nukes on us all as a last act of defiance. I'd think it better they surrender to fight anther day. Their defeat is inevitable unless the sanctions deter putin, which I hope happens... or somebody puts a bullet through his head.

Well that’s the hope - his people rise up and overthrow him.

The bravery of the Ukrainian people have already brought about change - Germany will spend more on defense and less on Russian oil (they should fucking mine their own coal ffs) and us and international companies pulling out of Russia. Everyone is watching.

I don't think Putin is seriously considering nukes. I'm not even convinced this is a real balls-to-the-wall invasion. The Rooskies have a huge advantage in manpower and equipment, but somehow they haven't managed to level Kyiv (I still want to say "Kiev" though). They should be rolling through like we rolled through Iraq - the initial war shouldn't even be a contest (but the occupation may be a shit-show).

It's really surprising to me that the Russians don't control the skies - I always kind of thought a successful modern offensive requires air superiority. Maybe that's just the US playbook - but it sure seemed effective in both Gulf Wars. Control the skies so you can bomb the shit out of your opponent with impunity.

That was my thought as well. None of this feels like a real invasion. More like minor scare tactics.

Well except that under Putin, they rolled into neighboring areas and never again rolled out.

As to the air thing, I might offer a comparison with our Afghanistan withdrawal and giving up bagram. That was a fucking stupid thing to do and we did it, apparently because Biden is such a hapless dumb fuck who doesn’t know it.

It’s widely reported Putin is nuts - not that much of a stretch that he’s made some similarly stupid decisions

Yes. Despite the image of the brave Ukrainians fighting to the end, they are probably better off surrendering and forming a resistance. Probably save a lot of Ukrainian lives.

If another country were invading here, would you say the same thing?

Yes. I don't care how dedicated and brave a population is, if they are ultimately outgunned 10 to 1, they will eventually lose. Once kyiv is surrounded they are done. Better to fight ala the French resistance during ww2.
I don't think it's that simple. Not all of Russia's military is there and a big portion of Ukraine's 44 million civilians are choosing to fight. So at what point of military ratio do you consider it worthy to fight?

With the Colonials outnumbered 2:1 and no true organized military, far fewer supplies and experienced soldiers, the English alliance with native tribes, 1/3 of the population staunch loyalists to England.... should we have not fought a revolution?

I think we’re seeing a very weak Russian army compared to what they try to project and I think that’s the reason there was such a build up. They were hoping Ukraine would cower and give up. There probably isn’t much hope in defeating Russia even though they aren’t as strong as everybody thought, but there is some hope. They can fight conventionally as long as they hold ground, and provide a fierce insurgency if they fail.

Their strong defense has rallied the spineless Europeans into giving support and putting some screws to Russia. It’s given Sweden and Finland and easier path into the UN.

The Ukrainians have done more in 4-5 days to damage Russian on the world stage than the west and UN have done in decades.

Like tyrants count on humans worry about their lives and loved ones to submit to all sorts of persecution. It’s beautiful to see a people say not just no but fuck no.

Honestly, the idea that the Russian conventional forces are shitty kind of scares me because it means they could see nukes as a great equalizer.
They’re not that crz. What would be the point of invading if they turn it into a nuclear wasteland, then get nuked themselves

I got into a fistfight with a taller much tougher girl over a goddam shared phone pg. you better believe I’d throw a fucking Molotov cocktail at someone trying to take away mg Netflix

I just don't want my golden years to be during a nuclear winter.

who does? I don't think its fair to expect freedom loving mostly hot people should have to lie down to stop it until the next aggression but totalitarian dickhead.

Air superiority doesn’t have to be jets in the skies. Russia and China both have strong anti-air defense systems. The fight they’re in right now the air assets will focus on close air support and intel gathering. Until a NATO country employs fighters there’s little need for Russia to employ large squadrons of fighters.
