You're all missing the point. National elections are not about appealing to the middle. They're about exciting your loyalists to show up at the polls. That's why politicians spend so much time on highly divisive topics they can use to demonize their opponents even if there's a middle ground that the vast majority of Americans can get behind.
Take abortion, for example. The extreme Left wants abortion-on-demand with no restrictions. The extreme Right wants no abortions ever. The sensible middle ground - the one that most American support - wants abortion up to viability with life/health/rape exemption beyond that. Where are the prominent politicians arguing for the middle position?
