When my dad retired, he requested his file and my mother's file. When my mom and brother were going through his stuff after he died, they found the files. My mother was from East Germany, so there's all kinds of stuff about how they checked out her background, lots of redactions - I suspect they used assets behind the Iron Curtain to check her out so they couldn't release that information. Hoover personally refused to send the usual "congratulations on your marriage" letter to my parents.
