Speaking of guns...

My dad had 3 guns. A 12-gauge double-barrel shot gun, a little .32 revolver, and a cool Japanese infantry rifle with a bayonet that he traded a bottle of whiskey for towards the end of the war. I ended up doing some hunting and shot a lot of long guns but the only handgun I had fired for the longest time was this little pearl handled peashooter out in the woods. Then my wife inherited her dad's .44 magnum (dirty harry's gun) and we used to shoot it offshore while dolphin fishing, and she let me take it sailing. Then she got it in the divorce. So I was gunless. And I bought this

SXP Ultimate Marine Defender

Was perfect for sailing. Slugs for an attacking boat's hull or motors, shot for intruders coming down the companionway. Fortunately, I never needed it and probably only shot it a dozen times shooting at tossed whiskey bottles offshore.:hunter:

But now that I'm not sailing, I'd prefer a handgun. I contacted a gun shop and was going to take it in to see what store credit I'd get towards a handgun and the conceal carry course. Hope that gives me a better deal (and is easier) than trying to sell it outright. Can I even do that in FL?

I have no experience with semi-auto pistols since the .32 and .44 revolvers are all I've ever shot.

Looking at the Sig P365 since a friend who carries as a federal agent recommended it.

But my brother who's into guns says get an S&W .380

Me? I want a Walther PPK and a shoulder holster since I grew up reading Ian Fleming.

Any thoughts?

Go to a gun store and see what pistol is comfortable in your hands. On caliber, dont go small if it’s primary purpose is self defense, go w .45, .380 & .32 are too small, imo.

Forget the idea of a shoulder holster. It's Florida. How often are you wearing a jacket to conceal it, yet have access to it? This isn't 1920 where men wore suits in 100 degree Florida weather

For the semi-auto pistol, find a training class and the closest gun range. Most gun ranges have a variety of weapons you can rent and shoot. Handling one in the store won't do shit for you because you not being familiar with semi-auto have a big choice to make in choosing the right gun: Hammer or striker fired. A lot of people are not comfortable with a striker fired piece, especially carrying. There's no manual safety on most of them and that makes some people uneasy, particularly those new to guns.

Realistically, you're just fine with a 9mm. I was a .45 carry snob for a long time, but I've seen a number of videos at this point comparing the ballistics/wound damage in self defense situations and there's really no noticeable difference when using a self defense round. "Stopping Power" is a myth at 5-10 yards between a 9mm and .45. A lot of people, moreso women, do carry a .380 (though I see no reason why a man would).

As I mentioned, I currently carry a stainless .45 and am looking to replace that with a 9mm. It's a tad lighter, a loaded magazine is lighter, ammo is cheaper and from what I've seen the last year, ammo is more readily available than .45. I see 9mm in stock advertised all the time, but have trouble finding .45 ammo online or in stores. That said, one test I haven't seen and for the uncertainty reason, I may change to carrying a 9mm, but my .45 will stay on my nightstand in case I need to shoot through a door

Yeah... joking on the shoulder holster...although I was such a fan at 8 or 9 that I bought the James bond kit that included the shoulder holster and gun and I used to go to church packing lol.
Taking you and Tommy's advice and going to my local gun shop/shooting range (frogbones) and shooting a few. See how much they will give me for the 12 gauge.

That looks like a cool gun store.

Don’t trade it in. Gun stores will lowball you. Had one offer me $125 for a gun that I sold, to a friend, for $350.

Check out gun broker and see what the shotgun is going for, then sell it at a gun show or something.

I have the p938 (w/ laser) and like it a lot. Single action with safety, tridium sites, very reliable. Think it might be smaller than the 365? Not sure. Also have Glock 26, but even though it is supposedly the compact 9mm, it is a lot larger than the 938. Sig is a good brand. Have owned Ruger lcp (380, smaller paint) and LC9, like the SIG much more. have had Taurus 9mm in the past and hated it, even with good ammo had reliability issues. For 9mm budget gun have heard good things about the SCCY CPX2, but never owned/shot. Hope this helps.

Appreciate the feedback.

I'm hoping as a store credit instead of cash they will be fairer.

I just looked and I bought the shotgun for $390 in 2014. Kind of surprised that it costs the same new today. But it looks like new so if they offer less than $300, I will probably take Tommy's advice and keep it. To shoot the Russkies.

Dems want your guns fellas

The liberals constantly say (most of them, except the extremists) say "Nobody wants to take your guns " .....and yet Biden keeps trying to put openly anti-2A people in charge. Shit, Biden himself has repeatedly said it.

That doesn't mean I think it will happen, but given that it has happened before, it's not impossible.

But we don't have transfer laws in Florida. Every Floridian who owns an AR/AK will have sold it to a stranger if they pull a stupid law out of their ass. I'd also add that given the complete ineptitude of this administration and the approval rating, trying to pass any significant gun laws is just begging for even more pushback from the right. They might just get the "attempted insurrection" they claim already happened.

they're not going to pass laws but that doesn't matter, this administration has been doing things administratively, even if it later turns out to be illegal they don't give a crap. See: rent moratoriums, vax mandates, pushing anti energy policies. Having an antigun radical at a high level of government should scare you.

Well, it potentially does, but are they going to act on it or is it just another rallying cry to pander to the demographic? Biden has been saying forever that nobody needs these guns and then repeats completely inaccurate statements or flat out lies.....but he hasn't taking a single executive step towards backing up his words.

Biden already tried to nominate an extremist anti-2A to head of ATF in 2021 and the backlash caused him to withdraw the nomination, IIRC. And that guys "calls" were the same as this guys.

I also question if even the liberals are truly that stupid unless they literally want a civil war. Upset over the Brady bill. You could do that then. Maybe even 15 years ago they could have gotten away with it. The way politics is so insanely polarized now, invading every aspects of our lives and the actions the left has taken the last few years. Actually passing and enforcing laws to come after a huge demographic that are already pissed off is just asking for an actual war.

Gun control has been a losing issue for Dems in the 21st century. Even more so now that a lot of left-leaning folks armed themselves during the 2020 Summer of Peace.

Yet they passed a law making hanging extra illegal based on a single case that was completely fabricated. The Biden administration appears to largely cater to the extreme minorities and openly tells everyone else to fuck up because they're wrong.

Yeah how popular is teaching little kids about weird sex and gender and they're racist, lockdowns and closed schools, open borders, soft on crime, double digit inflation, $4 a gallon gas, fucked up Afghan pull out? They don't give a shit.

This feels like throwing a dog a bone re: gun control. No one f'n has "ghost guns"....except maybe the CIA.

Never heard of a gang banger who does most of the killings get all fancy with a ghost gun. Never seen one made into an AR for the annual/bi-annual shootings. It means basically nothing.
