Every lasagna needs at least some ground italian sausage.
 
What are y'alls favorite Christmas time baked goods? My kid has been baking a lot the last 6+ months, mostly cookies and pies.

Anyone have anything out of the norm goodies? We're looking for new stuff for her to make.

The longest running dessert in our family is date nut balls and congealed cranberry salad. Can't say exactly what's in date nut balls, I need to get the recipe from mom. The online stuff is newfangled nonsense like adding coconut. Dates, pecans, brownsugar, butter....maybe something else, heated and rolled to a ball and coated with powdered sugar. The cranberry salad is such a 70s thing, but it's absurdly delicious. That I at least have the cookbook my grandma was in from the 70s, so I have that one. I looked it up online and again, their versions suck ass and none even have the topping. Lame asses.

Anyway....bars, unique cookies, fudge. What's your family's thing?
 
Ours usually just does normal baked goods like cookies and cakes. Our real specialty is Brunswick stew. We have it every year on Christmas eve. It's an old family recipe and we have done it every year that I've been alive.
 
1/2 cup butter
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup sugar beet syrup
1 3/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/16 tsp allspice
1 tsp baking powder
Red currant jelly
Rum glaze (rum and powdered sugar)

Combine butter, syrup and sugar
In separate bowl, mix flour, spices and baking powder
Add flour mixture to butter mixture one spoonful at a time
Chill dough for 1-2 hours
Roll out and cut out cookies using two different size cookie cutters (you are making sandwiches, the small cookies on top of the large cookies - so same shape cutters are a good idea)

Bake 8-12 minutes at 350(? I’m not sure about this temp but it seems reasonable)

When cool, take a little glob of currant jelly and use it as glue to stick the small cookie on top of the large cookie.

Then ice them with the rum glaze

Consume, I like them better after they’re a couple days old. But they are by far my favorite Christmas cookie. I don’t even know what they’re called but it’s a German recipe.
 
Sugar beet syrup? I've never heard of that. Guessing that may be an Amazon product if the tiny German section in Publix doesn't have it. I'll have to explain red currant jelly flavor to her, but I think not having a sweet filling would work and cut some of that absurdly sweet cookie :lol:

Spritz cookies, but my husband was using that thick Amish butter and it broke the cookie fun :-(

Well those are as common as it gets, but.....They are my favorite Christmas cookies. Nothing beats a soft, buttery cookie with the tiny sugar crystals on top. The best. Sugar cookies are probably the hardest cookie to bake though (out of normal cookies). It's a very fine line of pulling them out of the oven while they still appear uncooked and leaving them in 1 minute too long and making them too hard.
 
I can see if my wife will share some of her recipes. I know 100% you won't get the brownie recipe. Said she's taking that shit to her grave. :lol:

I never understood taking a recipe to the grave. At least pass that shit to someone in the family.

She likely will pass it along. She's just weird because her mom tries to take her recipes and "make them better". They usually end up worse.

My wife will find stuff on the internet and subject myself, and her coworkers, to her experiments. People pay her to make those brownies and cinnamon rolls. She makes a damn fine king cake too. The dinner rolls she makes are retarded good. You can't eat just 1.
 
At least hers get better. Try eating some of the baking concoctions of a teenager. Sometimes she'll use a recipe and make something serious. Sometimes, the exact opposite. Last week I was outside smoking, come in and she'd wreck the kitchen on experimental cookies and some weird tray thing of melted chocolate, strawberries, m&m's.....FFS she wasted $30 in ingredients on shit she wasn't going to eat even if it was good. It wasn't.....

No matter how many times I tell her that baking is a fucking science and not very forgiving like cooking is. Follow a damn recipe and quit wasting money........In one ear, out the other. And she still makes me try that stuff. That cookie dough last week.....ugh. it was bad :lol:
 
My wife was making a bunch of sourdough loafs for teacher presents last night. I was stoned and walked by and touched one, fucking ridiculously good texture on it and it was still warm, she had to run out to grab something. I couldn't help but to cut it and have a piece, it was the best bread I've ever eaten. I made it through last night, but she may still murder me.

You guys the polar winter special addition seltzers are amazing, they were the hit of my tea yesterday. The pear is great as is the brown sugar. I wish I’d bought the plum and cranberry ones but my husband was giving me a look like half the cart is water wtf so I didn’t get it.

What are yall making for Christmas? Doing trad here with ham, stuffing, green bean casserole, corn soffle and mashed potatoes. Not doing any sweets as we have a bunch leftover and got junior mint brownies for giving her a Tori Burch tote I decided I’d never use.
 
Not a big fan of seltzers.

My parents just left this morning after a few days here, so we had our Christmas already. Kept it simple for the handful of us. Ham, mashed taters, collards, deviled eggs, pumpkin and pecan pies. Not sure what I'm doing on Christmas day for the kid, probably smoking ribs. Leaving in the morning with the kid to do some fishing and camp overnight.
