Probably a bit of both. House prices are crazy and apartments even more. I make decent enough money, but I couldn't afford to buy or rent in my neighborhood now. Near impossible for younger ones that are starting out and not making much money. Really the only choice they have would be to stay at home or move away to a less expensive area.
I have a feeling my kids will be with me for a while. I'd rather they stay home than waste their money splitting rent on some shit apartment with 4 other people.
Kids could also try getting a real degree or going to trade school and getting a career that makes decent money. These kids have no real drive because there is no emphasis on hard work, personal responsiblity, contributing to society, etc. They've been given a cushy life and that's what they expect, without earning it.
I just don't buy that there's NO affordable options. I have no degree, sure I make above average. I have a mortgage, pay $900/mo for health/dental, I pay child support, a near $500 truck bill, $200/mo in cigars, roughly $5k in various medical bills over the year, house remodeling, bills that I pay on financed HVAC system and house painting, guns and ammo.....
and I have no credit card debt and get by enough to where I don't really keep a close on my bank account worried a payment will get rejected.
If I can do all that, there's no excuse for a 25 year old to not be able to live on his own or even with a single roommate. I'm a little bit of an outlier, that's true. But this is an entire generation that's a walking, talking excuse.
