🤷WTF? No one buys books

Pretty interesting reading about the publishing industry. Publishers make all their money on their back catalog of established successful books and the occasional breakout hit that happens every 5-10 years.

Didn't feel like starting a new thread for this, but since it's industry-related, this book review was pretty funny.

I used to read voraciously. Then I noticed more and more authors were adding liberal talking points to their stories, if not focusing on the perfection of the liberal worldview. Every book had a gay or oppressed-social-group character in it, and if they weren't the main char, they were more of a focus than the actual main char. Every book featured evil corporations and dastardly corrupt CEOs and board members, all of which were universally old and white and male. Even fantasy novels were filled with lesbian witches and vilified the noble male knight.

One of the few genres that didn't totally embrace this was the action novel. But they were all filled with super-soldier killing machines who were faster, smarter, better at everything than the grunts they were pitted against. It got tiring reading the same overmatched descriptions again and again. You could tell what was going to happen long before it appeared on the page.

So, rather than support these authors, I stopped reading for pleasure. Now my reading is mostly concerned with hunting magazines, reloading manuals, bbq/smoke books, and the occasional history book.

yeah good point, same with TV and movies. It seemed to change around 2010 and get worse and worse after floyd. I rewatched John Adams and it was so fucking refreshing not to have race or gender or whatever be a part of it and it was PATRIOTIC. That's what bugs me is how anti american so much is. Any white man has to be bad. Fuck that.

I've been recently listening to a lot of zombie and apolcalypse trash on audible. nearly all patriotic, anti government, strong and moral decent white guys, etc.

I still read history esp of the medici's and the enlightenment.

I read the 100 "great" books and that stuff several years ago and return to the ones I liked the best or reading other works by the same authors.
