Mastodon and other "fediverse" services aren't that hard. All you have to do is pick a server to be affiliated with. But there are a lot of folks on there already who got fed up with pre-Elon Twitter and other social media. So naturally now that the journos want to leave Twitter because their blue checks don't mean anything anymore, they're going to get swarmed by these folks.

Mastodon and other federated networks are by their very nature decentralized - there is no central moderation authority (though individual servers might have a moderation team). So "tech journalists" like Lorenz have no one to run to and complain when they get pushback.
