🤬Bitch Bitch thread

My boss, who is in the office 4 hours for one day a week max, thinks hybrid isn’t working because he doesn’t see everyone when he’s in

Like we could easily all come in the days he’s working if he needs some sort of Potemkin village to be sure that we’re working when he gets weekly reports from department heads that demonstrate our work.

My team has increased our work products like popular webinars and newsletters by 4 or 5 fold since hybrid work started, but he needs to see us.

Keep in mind in the 10 years we’ve worked together he’s never come into my office or asked me a meaningful question in person, only via email

As far as I'm concerned, the boss in our types of work are usually unaware and/or terrible at the technical aspect of the job. They're schmooze and talk to people, but suck as the actual job, so they're completely oblivious of the real workings.

My mom fell for an internet scam yesterday but I think I may have stopped it in time to control any damage.

She's been having email problems - she uses a Comcast/Xfinity account and it's been giving her some kind of SSL errors.

Anyway, she Googled for the Comcast customer support number because she wanted to talk to a human being and just called whatever came up. Naturally, it was an Indian call center scam. She gave the guy her name, address and phone numbers but swears she didn't give him a credit card number or anything. But he got access to her computer (I assume she enabled some kind of remote software but she couldn't tell me what she did), and he told her that she had a bunch of viruses and malware on her computer.

He then "sold" her a $300 subscription to some kind of antivirus service that Comcast supposedly offers (they don't) and commenced to "clean" her computer. So as the supposed virus scan and cleaning is happening, and there's a box with a progress bar on her screen, she calls me asking if she did the right thing.

It took me some time to get the details out of her, but I surmised it was a scam and got her to unplug the computer before it was done. I don't know if it was a ransomware attempt and they were in the process of encrypting her hard drive or what, but I think we were successful in interrupting the process because she then got a flurry of phone calls from different area codes (that she didn't answer).

I called one of the numbers and bitched out the Indian guy on the other end, but there's not much to be done.

Anyway, I think she understands what happened and has a Geek Squad appointment to look at her computer today.

FYI - They can also hack a router and get access to wireless devices. My dad doesn't go online at all and my mom only used it for her genealogy stuff and paying bills online. Nothing sketchy on their end, but after 30k disappeared from one of their accounts, the bank fraud dept told them it was getting common for their wifi routers to get hacked and get info from ipads and shit.

People suck.

She did go down to the credit union and put a hold on her bank accounts and the only credit card she uses. I don't think she does any online banking, but I'm not sure.

Funny, she's big into genealogy, too. She's got decades of research saved on that computer; that would probably be the biggest loss of this whole episode, along with some family photos. We have some backups but I don't know how old they are. She might lose a few years of work.

That would be devastating. My mom has done it since I was a kid, back when you had to go libraries with microfilm and cemeteries. Everything is online, but her office has an entire wall lined with bookshelves that's all genealogy and very old photos. Of course she also got sucked into both sides of the family. There was a fire out of control in the Cherokee National Forest where they live a couple months ago or so and was headed towards their cabin. Ranger warned them to get out. Mom is freaking out over all her binders and dad was trying to load all the guns, ammo, gunpowder, etc

Neat stuff I've learned from my mom's work: 2 separate ancestors arrived at Jamestown between 1615 and 1620. One of those eventually bought land from one of Pocahontas' many half brothers. Know many of my ancestors who fought in the French-Indian war, Revolution, and Civil war. Have a common grandparent as Thomas Jefferson. Rewind further, one of my ancestors was a Duke who signed the Magna Carta. Oldest ancestor we know of dated back to the early 11th century that has my surname (or a very similar variant, since obviously surnames got muddled up due to illiteracy and poor record keeping).

My elderly neighbor got taken for $500 recently. A man emailed her and claimed to be a surgeon in Nigeria. He needed funds so that he could travel to the U.S. to perform an emergency appendectomy on his son.

My mother in law told her she was being scammed but the lady didn't listen. They were about to take her for another $2k before my MIL finally convinced her. The lady is really dumb so I can see why this happened.

Even stupid people, I don't see how anyone would blindly send money to a foreign country for some sub story. Why do they care about a random Nigerian who needs to get to America? How did that person find HER specifically and ask for money? None of it makes sense.

What’s her contact info pls?

One of my friends is a small town bank manager and a lady wanted a check for $30K for some bitcoin thing. It was so obviously a scam he refused to issue it and pleaded with her to wait, but she went to another bank and is out $30K. Good legit investments don't require immediate payment people

My MIL (80 something) fell for one where as a secret shopper you review services. Her first assignment was Western Union wiring money. They sent her a check for 500 bucks (no routing number or account number on it) and she was instructed to wire 500 to some recipient in Minnesota and grade the service.

have leftover grilled chicken, so I grabbed some of those salad kits from publix. The little bag inside that has the salad dressing and whatever add ons like sunflower seeds, dried corn, or whatever mix you got....Not there.

How the fuck does a company leave out everything but the cabbage?

He claimed to be an American doing doctors without borders. She said his name sounded familiar so she thought he was an old friend of her husband. There are a million things wrong with the story, but she just wouldn't listen to my MIL. Aside from being pretty dumb this lady is stubborn as hell. It's a bad combination.

The accountant, that my wife’s employer uses, fucked up the withholding from her check. They’ve been paying the fed amount to MS, and the MS amount to the feds. This has been going on since 01/01/2023.

Now we’re going to find out how they fix their error. Probably going to need a lawyer.

Stubborn should make it hard to pry money loose. Really it's baffling how old people are usually the targets for scams like that. They're supposed to have common sense. Maybe that all disappears, like their ability to drive the speed limit, turn on red, and stay on just 1 side of the grocery aisle.

Fuckin sciatic nerve pain. I've had it off and on for years but in the last month this shit has gotten really bad. I can't stand up for more than a few minutes, I have to sit to shower, etc. Got an MRI done and I have a severely herniated disc so that's fun.

I heard your elderly neighbor is on good terms with a Nigerian doctor. Bet you could get a consult for a few hundred dollars.

Damn, that sucks man. If there's one thing I really miss about drinking, it's for physical pain.
