That hour-too-long thing: yeah. I feel you. Let us the fuck out already.

The New Yorker, which is one of the few publications left whose critics are not a bunch of back-door crack whores to the movie industry, panned the new movie. Incoherent, chopped-up action sequences; substitution of thudding violence for the weird charm and humor of the first couple of Batman flicks; pinched, monotonal performance by Bale. They raved about Ledger too, by the way.

I believe it was within the past two years or something like that. I remember reading something about her modeling for a lingerie line just after having a kid I think. I reserve the right to be wrong of course.

Isn't that the same publication with the incomprehensible cartoons?

It was a touch too long, but it didn't bother me that much. And on reflection, they're spot-on about Bale - he was pretty flat, but I think it was more the writing than his acting (though his raspy Batman voice really annoys me). Let's face it: this movie wasn't really about Batman. It was more about Dent and the Joker.

Also, I don't know what "weird charm and humor" was present in Begins. If Batman & Robin is an example of that charm and humor, then I'll be saying "no thank you." I prefer my Batman without nipples, my villains without the punny one-liners of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze and my Gotham City without a rainbow of colors.

EDIT: I just realized you said the "first" couple of Batman flicks, not the "last" couple. Anyway, they're right: Nolan's Batman lives in a much dimmer and more realistic world than Burton's. Don't get me wrong - I thought Burton did a great job, too, even with Batman Returns. It's just two different interpretations of the same source material, much like the comic books have gone through several different versions of Batman through the years.

EDIT 2: Shit, I can't believe I wrote that much about a comic book movie.

Saw the movie last night. Freakin' awesome. Leslie was disturbed, but I didn't find the Joker or Two-Face to be that scary.

I would agree with Doc about Bale.

We saw this movie yesterday afternoon in the IMAX theater. I am a huge comic book fan and a fan of Batman in particular. While I think this is a fantastic movie, I found myself emotionally drained after this film. It is very dark and disturbing, and Ledger gives a sadistic performance as the Joker - an agent of pure evil and chaos. I'm not sure if I want to see this film again.

They definitely left room for a sequel. They can't leave the story how they left it. I just don't know how they are going to top this movie.

Is it just me, or did Gotham City clean up quite a bit since the previous movie?

I would definitely think twice about letting small children watch this movie. Like I said, I was disturbed by it. The movie could definitely give a child nightmares. The Two Face makeup especially.
