A source has told Sporting News that Florida co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has accepted a job as defensive line coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

Mattison joins the staff of first-year Baltimore coach John Harbaugh. Mattison has been at Florida since 2005.

Mattison also has served as defensive coordinator at Notre Dame and Michigan.

Good move for him. Sorry to see him leave. He is a hell of a Dline coach. I do however think in the long run this may help as I hated the Co-DC thing we had.

yeah this sucks a little, but Strong is more than capable.

I'm just curious to see who we're going to bring now...there are 3 vacant coaching positions.

I'd like to see Emmitt hired as an RB coach as it accomplish:

a) bringing back a UF legend into the fold - great for recruiting and I'm sure he knows a little about being a running back.

b) it would end the embarrasing debacle that is his NFL Live stint.

No. I don't want to bring in a former player with no coaching experience at all. Just because they were one of the best at what they did doesn't mean they are qualified to teach other people to do it.

From what I've read, Dan McCarney, formally at Iowa State and a current USF assistant, could possibly be named Mattisons' replacement as early as today.

In most situations I would agree with you, however, I don't know that a RB coach really requires that much teaching:

take ball...avoid being tackled...run forward...block this asshole trying to hit the QB...

obviously it's more in-depth than that, but I should think someone like Emmitt knows it well enough to teach it.

i kinda agree w/hater.

emmitt can draw upon his recollections as a player and coach the way HE himself was coached...when you consider UF, the cowboys, the cardinals, and dancing with the stars - i'm sure he's picked up some good, useful conditioning drills along the way.

I hope Hunter isn't too pissed about this. Didn't we tell him Mattison wasn't going anywhere?

from Franz:
All along I've said that Vance Bedford is the top candidate for the spot vacated by Doc Holliday and from what I am hearing today, he will choose between UF and (gulp) the Baltimore Ravens.

I believe --- and I haven't gotten good enough confirmation on this to feel really good --- that the backup plan is Aaron Alford, the secondary coach at Utah, who played at Colorado State when Urban Meyer and Chuck Heater coached there. Alford was a college teammate of Billy Gonzales and his position coach at CSU was Bedford.

The name that keeps popping up for the running backs position is Burton Burns, who is the running backs coach at Alabama. Burns was at Clemson a couple of years ago when they ran James Davis and C.J. Spiller all the time, unlike last season when the genius offensive coordinator threw the ball 69 times against Virginia Tech and ran the ball only TWELVE times. Burns is a tremendous recruiter, who had much to do with Clemson out-recruiting Florida for Spiller, who is from Lake Butler.

It's official on McCarney and still no word on Mattison's status:
Florida football coach Urban Meyer filled one of the vacancies on his coaching staff Friday, hiring former Iowa State head coach Dan McCarney as a defensive assistant.

Meyer did not specify the area on defense that McCarney will coach, but he's a veteran defensive line coach and there's a chance the Gators will be losing co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Greg Mattison to the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.

One media outlet reported Friday that Mattison had accepted a position as the defensive line coach for the Ravens. Baltimore and UF officials would neither confirm or deny the report, and there's a chance Mattison could remain at Florida.

Well...if they hired McCarney but Mattison isn't gone...well, what does that mean?

BTW...Bill watched Mattison NOT wash his hands after going to the bathroom at one of the coaches clinics...He always warns people to NOT shake his hand. Poppy. Ick.
Okay, let's try this!
