hunter the focus of signing day rumors

Post by radbag »

With today being Signing Day, Buford (Ga.) five-star defensive tackle Omar Hunter thought the worst part of the recruiting process was behind him. He didn't expect to be the central part of anymore rumors or to be hounded by phone call after phone call. However, after a delay in Florida receiving his Letter of Intent, that is exactly what took place.

When his faxed LOI hadn't been received by the Gators by mid morning – the rumor mill began to crank up.

Forget the fact that the signing ceremony wasn't scheduled to begin until 9 o'clock, that over ten players were signing letters and finally, that a trophy presentation was going to take place before the signing – when the fax wasn't received immediately – it had to be because was having second thoughts.

"We had the ceremony right at 9 o'clock," Hunter explained. "They lined us up at the table, honored us for being the state champions and then got us to sign our papers. I never once thought of reconsidering going to Florida. I knew that was where I was going to go. I don't know how those rumors got started."

Don't misunderstand the circumstances, it wasn't smooth sailing over the last 24 hours.

"I got a voice mail left to me last night by a coach that was recruiting me that coach Mattison was leaving Florida to go to Baltimore," said Hunter. "They told my coach the same thing. That's how things got started. That got to me a little bit, but I found out that wasn't going to happen."

According to Hunter, that was all cleared up on Tuesday night.

Wednesday's delay was nothing more then a signing ceremony prolonged by forces other than indecision.

"You can't let that get to you. For the most part I try to laugh it off. If you don't, it will start to get to you," said Hunter. "I laughed it off and then went on about my day."

With the recruiting process behind him, Hunter is preparing himself for the next level.

"Now it's time to work hard until I get ready to go down there. I'm going to get in the best shape I've ever been in to try to play from day one."
