Ryan Lochte, in the pool, commiserates with his teammates
after losing to France in the 4x100m free relay

Well, it was an exciting third day, with some drama surrounding Coach Troy's pick of Ryan Lochte to anchor the 4x100 free relay, which lost to the French. Upon some reflection, the French anchor's split was incredibly fast - comparable to Jason Lezak's anchor leg in 2008 - and I don't think any of the American swimmers could have equaled it.

Moving on, today we will see the following Gators in competition:

Headlining tonight's swimming finals, we will see Ryan Lochte (USA) go head-to-head against world record-holder Paul Biederman (Germany) in the men's 200 free. You may remember from Olympic Trials that Michael Phelps mysteriously dropped out of this event after beating Lochte by .05 seconds. I bet Phelps wishes he'd have dropped the 400 IM instead!

In other news, Gemma Spofforth (UK) has advanced to the final of the women's 100 back. She will have a tough time, as this field is stacked with talent, led by Australia's Emily Seebohm and American phenom Missy Franklin.

Melani Costa-Schmid (Spain) qualified for the semi-finals in the women's 200 free. She has a good chance to make the final, too, having tied for the fourth-fastest time in the prelims.

In the men's 200 butterfly, Omar Pinzon (Colombia) and Marcin Cieslak (Poland) failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Finally, Azania Stewart, a starter on the British women's basketball team will face Canada in the second preliminary round of competition. The Brits lost in the first round to Australia
