Note this from the table in the sidebar:

Alabama 980,882 870,438
Auburn 950,378 678,936

Wow, that's crazy. Ga. Tech also spends a lot for what they get.

Interesting that there are so many N/As - the bottom of the sidebar says that Pennsylvania schools don't report according to their public records laws, but there are lot more. I wonder how much USC spends, for example. I bet they're close to Tennessee

According to a review of more than 1,000 athletic department documents, obtained through public records requests, the Seminoles are spending nearly twice as much on football recruiting now than they did under former head coachBobby Bowden.Where Bowden's staff spent just more than $280,000 on recruiting during his final season three years ago, FSU cranked that budget up to $500,000 in 2010-11 and raised it again to $525,000 in 2011-12. That's an overall increase of nearly 86 percent. That money covers everything from airfare, hotels and rental cars for coaches to visit prospects around the country, to the cost of bringing a few dozen of those players to Tallahassee each year for official visits. It also includes more than $200,000 spent on private, chartered flights for FSU football coach Jimbo Fisher and his assistant coaches — the vast majority of which take place in the span of about six weeks leading up to February's National Signing Day.• One chartered flight carrying Fisher to visit prospects in three different states cost nearly $25,000.• Another trip, which took five FSU assistant coaches to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, cost nearly $15,000.• A quick trip for Fisher and an assistant coach to Lake City, just 100 miles east of Tallahassee, cost $1,625.

He notes that a change in coaching staff causes the cost of recruiting to go up in the short term. Bowden was there so long, he probably had connections freaking everywhere. You can see that our recruiting costs went up roughly 50% when Muschamp came on. I'd expect as this coaching staff works the state more, the costs will ease back to around that 2010 number.

That's a good point. Don't see the need to fly to Lake City, though.

EDIT: Okay, re-read the story - it doesn't say they flew. Still, $1,600 for two men to go to Lake City and back? That's $500 max, assuming a luxury rental car, gas and the best dining that Lake City has to offer.
