I do not like to pile on when a coach loses his job but it’s my job to explain some of the things that hurt Dan Mullen while he was at Florida. It’s a long list of things that went wrong and had many people concerned about the future of Florida from day one.
• One of his first big mistakes at Florida was how he handled the JaJuan Seider situation. Mullen had explained to Seider that keeping him at Florida was big to him and that he wanted him to be the running backs coach. Well, Seider turned down several jobs to stay and then once Mullen hired Greg Knox things changed. Mullen never communicated to Seider that he may be asked to move jobs but once it came to sign his contract, Mullen told Seider that he would be coaching tight ends with a focus on recruiting. When Seider questioned Mullen about the change, Mullen said to be a team player and not to question his boss.
• No matter who you talk too inside the department, everyone says that there were two groups of people inside the building. One side was the Mullen guys who had been with him for years and the other side was the “outsiders.” If you were an outsider, your opinion didn’t matter to Mullen so eventually guys would start trying to convince the Mullen guys about certain things in hopes they would communicate that to Mullen.
• This past offseason, I reported that Mullen had offered T-Rob the CO-DC job but that once he spoke to Todd Grantham, T-Rob quickly backed out of talks with Florida. This is another big issue Mullen had at Florida. Mullen would never step on “his” guys’ toes and instead had just hoped that T-Rob would be ok with just being a position coach after offering the CO-DC job.
• This issue continued when Todd Grantham was let go as defensive coordinator two weeks ago and Christian Robinson was promoted. Robinson pulled a guilt trip on Mullen about how he turned down the Michigan job last year and had earned the right to call plays the rest of the year. Mullen felt obligated after hearing that and decided to name Robinson the interim defensive coordinator despite knowing that he wasn’t ready.
• Dan Mullen was also asked last year to let John Hevesy go as offensive line coach, but he told everyone involved that under no circumstances would Hevesy be let go. The higher ups were upset about this but ultimately didn’t want to dictate to Mullen on how to handle his program.
• Regarding recruiting, Mullen’s problem is very simple, he never wanted any help from anyone. Multiple people in the state of Florida who coach at big schools have quit communicating with Florida because of the way Mullen handled things. Mullen has either not returned the calls or when they come on campus hasn’t spoken to them or their players and that has rubbed those guys the wrong way.
• It has also been said by multiple people that when assistant coaches would try to get Mullen on the phone with a prospect that Mullen would simply say why do you need me to do your job?
• Fans always said that Florida didn’t want 5 stars and that was somewhat true as Mullen and a few of his assistants simply wouldn’t recruit those guys if they had too much “drama” going on in their recruitment. For instance, a certain five star wasn’t being recruited by Florida because his position coach said that he had too much drama in his recruitment because he was going back and forth between three schools in his recruitment.
• I will not name names here, but a former Florida player once told Dan Mullen that he needed to recruit the defensive back position better because FSU had more depth than the Gators and Mullen responded to that former player by saying “what would you know about good depth.” This is a former player who played the exact position for Florida.
• Last thing I will add here is the disorganization within the program was bad and guys were never on the same page. That’s a recipe for disaster.
