🤔Ask TGB Any good security camera recommendations?

Over spring break, we went on vacation. My in-laws discovered that my mailbox had been destroyed by something - I figured a car hit it based on how they described it - it's been hit before, but not this bad. They managed to piece it back together (the post was intact, but the mailbox itself is plastic and can be reassembled - it' s not important).

We went out of town again this past weekend and I come home to find my mailbox open and empty. My wife and I never leave the mailbox open, and I at least get some junk mail every day. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I think someone stole my mail, maybe even casing my house. I do have a security system.

So I'm thinking about getting a security camera to cover the front of my house. I can mount it on the first or second story, so I could potentially put it out of reach of anyone who would casually try to disable it (though I would not enjoy being that high up on a ladder to install it). I already have floodlights on the corners so it can be hard-wired. Running ethernet cable would be very tricky in some places, but I have strong wifi so probably not necessary.

Anyone have any recommendations? It's probably 75 feet from my house to the mailbox.

Build one out of brick or get a steel one and make it look less sturdy. Should give a nice jar to a retard who tries to destroy it. I have a neighbor who has a mailbox that looks like a PO Box. Big box of steel, slot with key only opening. Of course you can never get packages in the mailbox that one.

But to your actual question - Nope.

I've seen the results of a mailbox built out of plate steel. 2 youngsters came through in their mom's mini-van, flung open the sliding door, swung for the fences... and the bat bounced off the mailbox, right back into the window of the sliding door.

While all this does sound entertaining, my wife would prefer that our mailbox be pretty.

A wifi camera should be fine. My gate is 200 feet from the router, and we can get signal. 75 feet should be easy.

My friend's dad was a master fabricator. The mailbox looked just a like a normal, large mailbox from WalMart... only built out of 1/4" plate.

Pretty can be done, but it isn't cheap.

I’ve got a ring camera about 20-25 feet up. It records fine off wifi , but at that height I couldn’t get a good shot of a dudes face who went through a bunch of cars in the neighborhood.

Well, what I meant was that the camera will be mounted on my house, pretty close to the router, so that's not a concern. But it will be about 75 feet from the mailbox. If someone's fucking with it, I would like the video to be clear enough to at least have a general description of the perp.

We had one made out of bricks, moved out of that house in '02.....mailbox is still there, undamaged and massive.

I doubt you will find a camera that will give you a good enough picture to see who did something. Maybe you could make out a vehicle type, but you wouldn't see well enough to make out plates or facial features. With my ring flood light camera I can see 200' out to the road, but when the dude going through my car was 25' from it you could just make out that it was a black dude, but that was it.

Have you considered mounting a cellular game camera near the mailbox? Like on a tree, about 10' high?

Cell plan is $10 per month.

Not a bad idea. Still within range of the wifi so a regular battery-powered security cam would do the trick and I could keep my $10. I don't have trees that close, but I do have some bushes and a street light.
