Short version: we are biologically prevented from caring about anyone other than our immediate tribe, a group of no more than 150 people with whom we share some kind of more intimate bond.
That's why everyone has an "us versus them" mentality - be it Republicans vs. Democrats, Gators vs. Seminoles or Statists vs. Anarchists. It's easy to simplify and demonize everyone who lives outside your personal monkeysphere.
