I think it is because they seem to have broken every PR rule in the book. I think they tried to deny a problem for too long and then have still not completely come clean.

I do. And the fact that most of the politicians questioning them are in the back pocket of the AUW doesn't bother me at all. :eyeroll: A good point was made the other day, because we are pissing off some of our strongest allies and Japan is one of them...this doesn't help.
I'm not saying Toyota isn't at fault, but it seems to me they are doing everything they can to make up for it. They seem to realize that once their Brand is damaged, they better do something FAST or it will never be the same for them.
And another thing...I THOUGHT (but I could be wrong) the cars made in Japan are not the problem...it's the cars made here in America. Which seems even more suspicious since the UAW does not like these foreign owned plants that don't have union workers. I'm not saying this is all made up...but I do think they are getting more scrutiny than necessary.

Toyota fucked up, but they are not the first auto company to do so, and certainly won't be the last.
Yes, they deserve to get blasted a little, but it's getting past that point.

I completely agree... I think some in the current administration are working a little too hard to tip the scales toward the American Auto industry.
A lot of the stuff in the news reads like a psychological tariff of sorts. (Full disclosure: this is from a Prius owner)

And from a supporter of the current administration too! I would value your opinion on this more than most!

WASHINGTON – The Associated Press has learned that five days before Toyota announced a massive recall, a U.S. company executive wrote in an internal e-mail: "We need to come clean" about accelerator problems.
Irv Miller, Toyota's group vice president for environment and public affairs, wrote: "The time to hide on this one is over." He went on to say: "We are not protecting our customers by keeping this quiet."
The recently retired Miller wrote the internal e-mail as Toyota officials were on their way to Washington to discuss the problems with federal regulators.
Toyota is about to get raped!

^^^And their sales were up 40% too...what's up with dat? My parents just bought a Rav4 from a Used Car Dealer who had the VIN checked and it wasn't on the recall list (made in Japan).
