On to recruiting...
As I posted on Saturday, I was planning on making it over to Tallahassee to visit their Seminole Showtime event but a little predicament like the birth of my second child kind of detoured that from happening. Regardless I had a couple of very good moles present and heard some very interesting stuff.
First of all, it turns out there was one particular 4-star prospect that they refused to let work out and the excuse was he was a little late. This prospect (name withheld) wanted to workout and someone didn't get the memo of who he actually was. Once the coaches there realized, they saw the prospect in the stands. (It wasn't very difficult with the 150 people watching) they invited the prospect to come on down.
Later, they had an “ice cream social” for the prospects and this 4-star wasn't allowed to eat it because he didn't pay for the camp, although he tried to. It was yet another snafu and when the coaches found out they tried to make it better and wanted the prospect to stay in town over night and come by the school. No way that happened.
Needless to say, I heard from this particular source that the entire thing was horrible. The former player introductions went on for an hour and the sad thing is only very few names did the kids recognize. Instead of rap music and fun stuff going on, they played the war chant music the entire time during the camp and that was the most annoying thing at all. (I couldn't help think that it was probably played more in one night that it was in the last six seasons combined). This prospect told me that compared to Florida's new digs, the FSU locker room looks like a high school joint.
A couple of guys that were overheard telling other prospects they were going to be Noles were Christian Jones and Kenny Shaw.
On UF's crazy wide receiver board. I have heard that there are three wide receivers on the board trying to commit to Florida right now. One,we know is James Louis and that will likely shake itself out this week in my opinion. I won't mention the other two as they are still being recruited, but it surely is a sign that the staff believes they are going to get the very top guys in my opinion. There is also a fourth wide receiver committed to a non-rival, that is asking in the class. This one was rated very high at one time, but he was told the inn was full. That is technically not the case, but it certainly is getting that way.
Back to James Louis. He wants in, that is out there, and we all know it. The staff really likes him. He will get a work out this Friday and they are checking on his grades and other things they check on with prospects before they do anything. I believe if he has a great camp, he will be in this class and soon afterward.
The problem about busting a commit before it's time is sometimes on how it effects other receivers on the board. I was told that Chris Dunkley received five text messages from schools he was being recruited by and all of them said that Florida lied to him. That isn't the case, but he certainly made some phone calls as soon as he got that first text message.
Dunkley was in Gainesville between 9 and 6 on Sunday. Like Jason said, he had a real good time. They are going to give him the royal treatment Saturday after he stays over and then go from there. I think the staff would like him to commit, but I don't get the feeling it will be a now or never kind of thing for Dunkley. That time may come to pass but him being an early enrollee will help resolve it before it is too late. Expect to see Dunkley on the sidelines in the fall at five Florida football games and one on the road as well.
Gerald Christian is on campus Monday as I am typing this.
Jeff Luc made an impromptu visit to Gainesville before he went to Tallahassee....again. There are several things like this that make me feel very good about Luc although I know he had a good time in Tallahassee at Showtime.
There are some big time variables involved with Ronald Powell but I have suddenly gone to believing he is going to be a Gator when all is said and done.
Look for Neiron Ball and Corey Crawford to be visiting UF for Friday Night Lights (FNL). Both have been told by Georgia that they don't fit their plans and from what I understand it got pretty ugly with Crawford.
It seems that Crawford, his whole family, and the families of several other Columbus (GA) Carver kids showed up in Georgia and they were expecting Crawford to be able to commit. That wasn't the case and my understanding is that all the 2011 kids are not happy with it wither. I don't know all the details but it is a real mess for UGA in that hot football community.
As far as the Gators are concerned, neither Ball nor Crawford have been told they could commit, but they are both coming to earn a committable and want to. I expect Lynden Trail to be here too, but not exactly sure on that one. I think by the time the week is done after FNL, the Gators will have at least two more defensive linemen in the fold.
I think we will find out on Wednesday more about TJ Stripling. It appears UGA is holding out for him and they are expecting him to commit to them on Wednesday. I still think UF will get him, but the timing is great because they will know by Friday whether they need to move on.
Don't rule out Corey Lemonier and Owamagbe Odighizuwa either as guys that could very well be in this class before all is said and done.
