Anybody have good info on the sitch in Honduras?

I find it hilarious that it takes Obama about 1.5 seconds to condemn the Honduran military's apparent enforcement of the rule of law (with no injuries or deaths that I've seen reported)...they may have jumped the gun by ousting him prior to the official Congressional passage of his impeachment/replacement, but the Supreme Court had apparently already announced that his planned "referendum" on a Constitutional re-write was illegal and he had denounced the Court's decision in that case.

So we have 2 branches of government telling one branch that his plans will break the law, so the Congress ousts him...and this gets an immediate denouncement from Obama? While the fucks in Iran have killed and wounded hundreds (if not thousands) of innocent citizens and it takes him 8-10 days to condemn that blatantly illegal action?

Meh...I assume I'm just misinformed and Obama has much better info that justifies his seemingly backward actions.

We have a socialist Sec of State as well:
Mrs. Clinton has piled on as well. Yesterday she accused Honduras of violating "the precepts of the Interamerican Democratic Charter" and said it "should be condemned by all." Fidel Castro did just that. Mr. Chávez pledged to overthrow the new government.

Honduras is fighting back by strictly following the constitution. The Honduran Congress met in emergency session yesterday and designated its president as the interim executive as stipulated in Honduran law. It also said that presidential elections set for November will go forward. The Supreme Court later said that the military acted on its orders. It also said that when Mr. Zelaya realized that he was going to be prosecuted for his illegal behavior, he agreed to an offer to resign in exchange for safe passage out of the country. Mr. Zelaya denies it.

God forbid someone follows the law! For fuck's sake, don't they realize that he's the prez of their country and the Constitution doesn't apply to him? This administration is a fucking joke.

Hey slider....you gotta defend this one for me man...cuz I just don't get it. I mean, at least with the neutered cap and trade bill I at least understood the argument despite its obviously invalid premises...I just can't see any reasonable argument for this position.

That cap and trade stuff is going to cost us a fortune...just heard they slid in a provision where you need to get your house up to "their" code...(who they are is yet to be seen) for energy efficiency...or what will happen? You won't be able to sell your house. Nice. I'm glad I'm not planning on moving anytime soon...my house was built in 1970 and I can only imagine how much money I'd have to spend to make it energy efficient enough for our gov't. Ugh.
Okay, let's try this!

All I know is that Hugo, Hillary, and Barry are against it, so I am, by default, in support of it.

I can SORT OF understand staying out of the mess in Iran...we have a no win sitch there....but this one? I don't get...why get involved with this one when it seems the will of the people has been done and done legally? I don't get it and quite frankly, I am scared to death of this administration.

Wait wait wait...folks...we're jumping the gun on this one. We should wait to see what Colbert thinks before we make any decisions on this.

This is really bizarre. I can't imagine any American President siding with the incumbent dictator in this situation, no matter his politics.

I mean, despite the media's use of the word "coup," it was anything but. This was the rule of law in action.

This is - by far - Obama's biggest and most important foreign policy fuck up to date.

Well, I expect that kind of response from the United Nations. But not from the leader of the free world, who is supposed to espouse respect for both democracy and the rule of law.

"A 'coup' in Honduras? Nonsense", written by Octavio Sánchez (a lawyer, is a former presidential adviser (2002-05) and minister of culture (2005-06) of the Republic of Honduras):
These are the facts: On June 26, President Zelaya issued a decree ordering all government employees to take part in the "Public Opinion Poll to convene a National Constitutional Assembly." In doing so, Zelaya triggered a constitutional provision that automatically removed him from office.

Constitutional assemblies are convened to write new constitutions. When Zelaya published that decree to initiate an "opinion poll" about the possibility of convening a national assembly, he contravened the unchangeable articles of the Constitution that deal with the prohibition of reelecting a president and of extending his term. His actions showed intent.

Our Constitution takes such intent seriously. According to Article 239: "No citizen who has already served as head of the Executive Branch can be President or Vice-President. Whoever violates this law or proposes its reform [emphasis added], as well as those that support such violation directly or indirectly, will immediately cease in their functions and will be unable to hold any public office for a period of 10 years."

Notice that the article speaks about intent and that it also says "immediately" – as in "instant," as in "no trial required," as in "no impeachment needed."

Continuismo – the tendency of heads of state to extend their rule indefinitely – has been the lifeblood of Latin America's authoritarian tradition. The Constitution's provision of instant sanction might sound draconian, but every Latin American democrat knows how much of a threat to our fragile democracies continuismo presents. In Latin America, chiefs of state have often been above the law. The instant sanction of the supreme law has successfully prevented the possibility of a new Honduran continuismo.
