Gainesville Police arrested UF starting cornerback Janoris Jenkins over the weekend after they reported he was involved in a fight and an officer used a Taser on him.
Jenkins, 20, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of affray and resisting arrest without violence, according to a report.
Police received a report of a fight in the 100 block of South Main Street and arrived at the location at about 2 a.m., Saturday to find Jenkins fighting with about five other people. An officer ordered the group to stop fighting but no one listened to the commands, the report stated.
The officer then drew out a Taser and told the group stop. At that point, Jenkins hit another person in the head, police reported. The officer then used the Taser on Jenkins.
Jenkins was hit with one cycle from the Taser, but afterward he stood up and ran away.
The officer reported he yelled at Jenkins to stop but he kept running. He was later arrested about one and a half blocks away. Police said Jenkins admitted he was fighting with the others because he thought they were trying to steal his chain, according to the report.

^^^don't give a crap about the time.
It's the offseason - not the thurs/friday before a game.
don't really even care about the fight.
18-22 year olds fight all the time over stupid stuff. IMO, that isn't/shouldn't be criminal a lot of times.
What bothers me is the resisting/running part. What is so hard about when the police show up you quit acting like a dickhead?

I agree Jimmy. The fighting is just stuff, but the running from the cops is idiotic.

For what it's worth, part of the other side of the story.
UPDATE: "Gainesville attorney Huntley Johnson, who is representing Janoris Jenkins, said he believes his client did nothing wrong during the weekend skirmish and simply defended himself.
Johnson said he learned through an investigation that Jenkins tried to break up a fight and only struck back when someone grabbed his rope chain and tried to "choke him."
"At that moment, he wasn’t focused on listening to the cop telling him to desist young man," Johnson said.
Johnson believes Jenkins will receive deferred prosecution and possibly find the charges dropped after what he calls a "very minor incident." The Sentinel left a message with a Gainesville Police spokesman."

Sweet. Sounds plausible...I guess we'll have to wait and see. Thanks 95. I could imagine situations in group fights where it would be difficult to hear and recognize an officer's order to stop.
Guess we can't make any real judgment yet.

If what he says is true that he didn't hear/see the officers then it makes it hard to resist them...
some things of this story don't add up and either corroborate JJ's story, or make him out to be a damned liar...
he got up and ran after being tased...the officer said he got hit with a full cycle. If he was able to run after that...good lord, what a beast. but I doubt it. So, either he didn't get hit and could back up his story that he didn't know...or he was bound and determined to resist.

I'd be surprised if he got fully tased and was able to haul ass from the scene.

Jenkins was the only person arrested.
http://www.theledger.com/article/20090601/NEWS/906015045/-1/WIRE07?Title=Gators-Jenkins-Charged-With-Resisting-Arrest
Wonder why he was the only one arrested? Considering he was charged with "affray", it stands to reason the others were just as guilty of that same offense...of course, I can see the cops letting the fight slide, but then once he ran, charging him with everything they could come up with.
Just curious that there were like 5 others fighting and none of them were arrested. If the fight is worth tasing a dude over then it's gotta be a pretty brutal fight...couldn't have been entirely one-sided.
I dunno. Just seems weird to me.

That's what I'm guessing too...I just hate the rule that police have that much discretion....if he wasn't going to be charged for the fight to begin with, resisting doesn't mean he deserves to be charged with it if the others aren't, IMO. Of course, I also realize that the cops' job in that sitch is to charge anything possible and let the lawyers/judge sort it out later....still, sucks society has to work that way. Ah, well...such is life.

public affray is a very minor deal to be charged with.

Which is why I think it's useless to tack on that charge. He got arrested because he ran...so charge him with resisting w/o violence and be done with it....again I realize that's not protocol for the police...it's just another charge to add to the list and make him look worse with a word that most folks in the general public won't even recognize when they read it in the news.
In the end, not a big deal. Minor annoyance.
