You now what's funny (peculiar, not ha-ha)? A lot of victims of this kind of thing will go to their grave swearing that they trusted - and still trust - the guy who stole their money. My wife has prosecuted several of these types of cases and the victims just don't want to admit that they got taken.

Of course, Madoff's a little different because he had a great reputation, but still...
