In 2003, when he won the American League home run title and the AL Most Valuable Player award as a shortstop for the Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez tested positive for two anabolic steroids, four sources have independently told Sports Illustrated.

Rodriguez's name appears on a list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball's '03 survey testing, SI's sources say. As part of a joint agreement with the MLB Players Association, the testing was conducted to determine if it was necessary to impose mandatory random drug testing across the major leagues in 2004.

btw - there's talk about a-fraud suing the baseball players union for allowing this to leak...if he does that, he doesn't have to comment about the report...he'll comment by saying "my lawyer has advised me that because we've got a pending court matter, i am not allowed to discuss the details of this case"

I'm disappointed more than I'm upset. I enjoyed watching the guy play...especially when he was on his game, and I was hoping that he could break Bonds' record and do it clean as rad mentioned. Oh well.

I don't think BB's record will be broken by someone that is clean. In fact, IMO, Hank Aaron is still the HR king since pretty much everyone that broke his record was juicing.

I never understand this...why is it baseball? What about football? I don't understand why players feel the need to juice in baseball and why not in football? Or do they do it football but it's not illegal in that sport? I don't get it. I know there have been football players that have come out about juicing but it never seems to be as big of a deal. I assume it's because how stats and records are such a big part of baseball? Breaking records being such a big deal and all?

Good that I'm not totally clueless. So do they juice just as much in football but because stats aren't such a big deal, no one really enforces it? Or do football players just really not feel the need to juice as much and the quantity of players that do it aren't as big in football?

Who knows, really?

Football tests for it, and has tested for it for a while. Which is why you don't hear the uproar about Football...they at least have the PERCEPTION that they are and have been doing something about it. Baseball only did something after they were brought along kicking and screaming into Congress and the court of public opinion.

You still hear about football players who juice...David Boston? Shawn Merriman?

a football player's got to go to college and then gets drafted by an NFL team...he's gotta make the roster...if he don't, he'll look to hook up with someones practice squad...or there's the CFL or arena football...if you can't crack it then, you're dreams of playing professionally are slim to none.

a baseball player doesn't even have to go to college...he could get signed right out of HS...in MLB, you've got a pretty deep and extensive farm system...some professional teams have 7-8 or more minor league affiliates...you can easily become a lifelong minor leaguer and if you are and you want to graduate to the next level, you'll need to somehow show more promise and more athletic superiority...maybe you juice...maybe you do it to get a better paycheck and stop bus-ing it from topeka to charleston.

guess what i'm sayin is there are more baseball players competing for jobs than there are football players.
