This is related to the Fiesta Bowl thread. Watching the local news this morning, the reporter was saying that Texas has made its case to be the number one team in the land. Mack Brown is quoted in the paper as saying he will vote for UT for number one because they are the best in the country. And there will be at least one sports reporter in the local paper who will vote them number one regardless of what happens on Thursday.

My response? You weren't even the number one team in your conference.

Yes, I think they got screwed out of the Big 12 Championship game. However, they knew the rules going into the season. In theory, the winner of Thursday nights game will be the National Champion.

I am for a playoff system. But we don't have one now. So voting for UT to be number one is sour grapes, especially when UF wins.

I also enjoy watching UT lose. Living in Austin, I am sick of hearing about them, and I think they are consistently over rated every year. I think the Big 12 is over rated as well, but that is another story.

Bottom line that we have to know about - there will be some votes for UT being number one at the end of the season. However, it will be a moot point, since UF will be National Champs after we beat OU!

Hell, I think even USC has more of a dog. Texas squeaked by a thoroughly unimpressive Ohio State team last night. USC blew up Penn State, and Penn State blew up OSU.

I will say this: the BCS don't get any fresher each year, does it, even with the little computer-model revisions they keep throwing out as "improvements"?

Bottom line: there are not just two contenders for the national title. Get that shit out of your head. And telling the coaches they have to vote for the winner of the NC game is just insisting that their little coronation game has legitimacy. It doesn't.

This system blows. The bowls were far better. A playoff would be far better.

So UF will just have to crush Oklahoma to change their minds. This isn't the first time I've heard about closed minded people from Texas. :D

^ LOL. Does Pete have a vote? He will probably vote for himself as well.

I think we are about 2-3 years away from being able to permanently reload year after year, like USC does. Winning on Thursday will help speed that process along. Would you all agree?

Wow, it looks good, doesn't it?

What amazes me about Urban Meyer is that all these guys seem to be coexisting peaceably with small amounts of playing time. He is doing a hell of a job managing all the talent. I mean, running backs don't go to college to carry the ball four or five times a game. They want twenty. Somehow -- and it may just be luck this year -- Meyer is making it work.

Now, it may be Tebow too. I remember that Spurrier never had the same team cohesion after the '96 MNC season. Wuerffel was a great team leader. Doug Johnson was not.

But, knock on wood, the recruiting machine seems well on its way. I hope Charlie Strong sticks around a little longer.

Toothy, I think that is because they aren't premier backs out of HS. It'll be interesting to see if we can sign a premier back that wants the ball 20 times in this offense.

You know my FIL always says that while recruiting is important, coaching is more so. At the time he told me this it was pre-Mark Richt at UGA and he used them as an example...they get great recruits but with so-so coaching it doesn't do you much good. Another good example was Ron Zook.

In my opinion, Miami looks to be going down the same path. Yes, they had a young team, blah blah blah...but we went 9 and 3 in the SEC with a very young team last year!
Okay, let's try this!

winning cures all ills...if we're 7-5, I bet you hear griping about getting the ball more.

In today's paper, the head sports writer says that according to BCS rules, coaches who have votes are obligated to vote for the winner of the BCS title game as number 1. If they don't they will lose their voting privileges. The writer urges Mack Brown to vote UT #1, damn the torpedoes, in order to blow up the BCS system.

So who knows what will happen. I think Brown likes his vote to much to actually try this. He does not impress me that much. They won their national championship mainly because of Vince Young, not great coaching on his part.

You think he can back down now that he put it out there on national TV? He'd lose a lot of respect from his players imo.

My prediction is he votes Texas #1 and the BCS gives him a pass.

I think Mack Brown breaks ranks. I thought the Utah coach said he was gonna do that too. I think they should, and make a stink of it too. The system is coercive. "Blown up" is exactly what it needs.

Praise to them if they follow through.

Go Gators.

I have had two sparkling exchanges with Longhorn friends of mine in the last day, and a fairly reliable strategy of response has emerged. A certain lucky symmetry in bowl assignments helps illustrate.

Short reply to aggrieved Texas fan:

1. The team that you beat by 10 to make in sum and total your BCS claim we also beat by 10.

2. The team that beat us by 1 stove in the team that beat you by 6.

Did you see Bianci's recent column about Meyer? He'd be a fool to take the ND job.

I don't know where they are going to find the money to pay off Weis' contract AND pay Meyer what it would take to go to ND. I could see him going there someday but I doubt he would leave as early as next season...not with the 09 team he has right now.
