Might just be me but when I click on PM within a thread to attempt to PM someone, it actually opens a reply to the thread and not a PM. I think it does something similar when clicking on someone name within a thread too.

i just tried PMing you from this thread and was able to get to the PM screen

are you sure you're not mistaking the PM screen from a quote/reply screen? they look similar to me too
