Man, I really pissed off someone at GC. I lost over 200 points in one day. When I inquired, I was told by Gatornana that ONE negative poster did this to me. She couldn't even tell me who did it - just that they had a lot of rep and power!

Is this the biggest load of garbage or what? What a joke. I'm not mad at Nana, I just think the whole system is lame. I told her that I thought the whole Reputation thing was silly.

I slammed them pretty well on their whole rep thing. Growl was giving away cash to rep the "special" poster of the month. I told them the rep system was a joke being it was initially to help show the difference between good and bad posters but the fact they were just giving away rep for the hell of it pretty much meant it was worthless.

It is beyond me how adults can care anything about something as lame as "rep." It's something designed for 10-year-olds. I've never understood the point and, frankly, found it rather insulting--like mature adults could be seduced by something so incredibly stupid.

I just can't imagine investing the time and energy to give out or even track rep because the act doesn't add any value to the interaction, IMO. I mean, if you really want to rep someone, why not simply [img]{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lmao.gif[/img] at their post? Or concur. It IS a message board, right? I just don't see the necessity or even value in adding another level to the interaction that doesn't have any real substance.

I think the 'gold star' happens when you fill up your rep bar. But that's just a guess.

I think some sites will use Rep to gate access to features and forums. Kinda like post count, only completely outside the user's control.

^^ Yeah, rep is a good way to filter the good posters from the bad - if you're going to let the masses decide who stays and goes.

It has no real value on a board where the "bad" element is banned before they have a chance to do something bad and where only paying members may give negative rep.

^^ It also has no real value when people are so wanton to just pass it out to everyone in hopes of getting more for themselves aka rep whoring. If it was truely used to honor rep worthy posts only it would mean something. At GC it don't mean shit.
