:toothy: toothy/weegie - should lilah have used "WAS" instead of "IS" since she used the past tense word "HAD" as in "I just HAD to explain..."
No. The ball gag still exists...thus she had to explain what it is.

I actually think of it as, the idea of a ball gag exists apart from a specific time (not now, not in the past), so it's proper to talk about it in the present because the idea still exists.

She meant that the situation was awkward, so past tense was appropriate.

"is" or "was" doesn't refer to the situation, though. Is that irrelevant?

Oh, I was looking at the wrong "was."
In the title, the "is" is correct because it's describing a constant state of an object.

Hater is substantially correct.
I had to explain to her who Abraham Lincoln was.
I had to explain to her who Jessica Simpson is.
The notion that the verb tense stays inflexibly in the present or in the past comes from badly taught English: slap them with a rule, no matter how often the rule doesn't apply.

There's nothing more appealing than a man's sexual insecurity.
