The fish rots from the head down: T.K. Wetherell speaks up.

Wetherell, Florida State University president, has this to say about the cheating scandal:
"The violations focused on a poorly structured online course, lack of attention to detail by a faculty member, and insufficient oversight by the athletic department of one rogue tutor -- all coming together to result in a 'contaminated' class," Wetherell said in the statement....

Wetherell, who has been vacationing in Montana since the suspensions were announced Tuesday, said no coaches were involved and that many of the athletes simply used poor judgment.

"The student-athletes, who come from a number of sports, did not enroll in the course with the intent to do anything wrong," he said. "However, a university-employed tutor provided inappropriate help on exams. In the final analysis, these students made the decision to use the answers provided for an online exam, and they are suffering the consequences."
Okay. What's the problem with that? The problem is that dozens of FSU athletes cheated. The president of the university analyzes that failure to choose right over wrong -- something we ask our six-year-olds to do, or to bear the shame for failing to do -- as a failure on the part of everyone EXCEPT the students who cheated.

The students "made the decision to use the answers provided." Well, okay, this sounds like a simple matter, as if the hotel maid left two mints on your pillow and you figured it would be okay if you ate both.

Sir, first: you are a university president. You stand for academics in your little town. And you stand for its highest ideals, two of which are learning and integrity. So stand for them.

Second: if you as university president have to choose which one to throw under the bus, A) 25 of your student-athletes or B) the academic environment they work in, including curriculum, instructors, and tutors, you choose A -- particularly if there's evidence, as there is, that those 25 student-athletes cheated, as they did.

If you instead choose B), as you have, then you have set yourself a problem: containment. And are we really going to believe in this notion of a "contaminated class"?

What the hell is a "contaminated class"? It sure sounds like something where no one is at fault -- maybe radiation just crept in, or the books were past their shelf date, or there were just some serious bad vibes in the room.

Because if I were a father with a daughter who was a serious student -- and in 15 years I will be -- and that daughter were considering Florida State University, I would see this sort of weakness on the part of the university president as exactly the sort of thing that would made me forbid my daughter to attend.

Class contamination. Faculty members who lack attention. And rogue tutors. (The very word "rogue" is such an obvious ploy. Yeah, I guess that's the same tutor who mentored Deion Sanders -- all those years ago.)

And students whose decision to cheat is whitewashed by the university president?

This is a sad sight. At any university that aspired to educate its student-athletes, any university with ambition and integrity, it would occasion talk of the president's dismissal.

But probably not at Florida State University.

Here's the statement. Clearly the quotes I've provided are not taken out of context.

It opens with a strategically ambiguous statement:
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State University deeply regrets that the misconduct of a
few has affected so many.
Uh, do you mean the misconduct of the 25 affecting the (rapidly shrinking) "Seminole Nation"? Or do you mean the misconduct of those poor inattentive and rogue FSU employees affecting your great team of innocent virgins?

Oh, fuck it, it's a public statement, so here it is:
Dec. 21, 2007
STATEMENT OF T.K. WETHERELL,
PRESIDENT, FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY,
REGARDING NCAA INVESTIGATION
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State University deeply regrets that the misconduct of a
few has affected so many.

It is important to understand that the violations focused on a poorly structured online
course, lack of attention to detail by a faculty member, and insufficient oversight by the
athletic department of one rogue tutor –- all coming together to result in a
“contaminated” class.

No coaches were involved, and the student-athletes, who come from a number of
sports, did not enroll in the course with the intent to do anything wrong. However, a
university-employed tutor provided inappropriate help on exams, without the request of
the student-athletes in many cases. But in the final analysis, these students made the
decision to use the answers provided for an online exam, and they are suffering the
consequences.

We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that this does not happen
again. While we continue to implement corrective actions on the academic side, we also
are appreciative of the National Collegiate Athletics Association and the Atlantic Coast
Conference for their assistance as we work through the necessary punitive actions
regarding athletics eligibility.

To prevent this kind of situation from developing again, the university’s provost has
taken action to tighten academic controls, especially in regard to online courses.
Specifically, the university has taken the following actions:
• Modified the structure of the “contaminated” course;
• Moved all tests for online classes to a testing center that requires a photographic ID
and a pass code for students to enter; and
• Required that all tests for online classes be overseen by proctors who have no
connection to the athletic department.
These steps and others will bolster procedures that support academic integrity. We
expect to provide a report to the NCAA governing body in early 2008.

T.K., babe, the more you say it was a failure of the system, the more you damn the system. But the problem is, every student wearing garnet, every single one, is subject to that system.

This is not the smart play.

But then, you ain't president of Harvard, are you?

I mentioned this in our Pub forum my ex-hub is a Nole (and my oldest girl's dad) and along with the FSU helmet that Bill had in plenty (from not being able to sell them on Ebay or anywhere else for that matter), we are making up a fake diploma from FSU with a Masters of Music History to give to him. LOL. Fortunately I think he will laugh...what else can you do as a fan? It's either laugh or jump off a bridge.

This is an embarrassment to me. As a law student he represents me and the school I attend as well. Unreal.

Dave Hart's not letting Wetherell throw him under the bus that easily. From this article outlining which players are not going to the bowl:
Meanwhile, former Florida State athletic director David Hart Jr. rebutted part of Florida State President T.K. Wetherell's statement Friday that could have implied that the scandal led to Hart's leaving the university a year before his contract expired.

"There's no connection there," Hart said Saturday. "I can assure you that my separation from Florida State had absolutely nothing to do with this current review of academic misconduct. To even suggest otherwise would be irresponsible."
