Dwyer, Phelps, Adrian and Lochte after winning gold in the 800m Free Relay
Yesterday was quite an exciting day for the University of Florida's Olympians, as Conor Dwyer and Ryan Lochte played integral roles in the US team's dream-crushing performance in the 4x200 free relay yesterday. To top it all off, Abby Wambach scored the only goal in the US women's soccer team's 1-0 defeat of North Korea and Lisa Raymond defeated Poland in the second round of women's doubles tennis.
There's a lot more action today, however, and Lochte has a particularly full schedule.
In the men's 200 backstroke, Lochte qualified with the second-fastest time in prelims and will move on to the semifinals, which will take place this afternoon. Omar Pinzon (Colombia) placed fifteenth and will also advance. Marco Loughran (UK) did not qualify, and he his Olympics are over - time to get some action in the Olympic Village!
In the men's 200 IM, Lochte also qualified second for the semi-finals in a time of 1:58.03. Michael Phelps qualified fourth, but I expect a real showdown between the two in the finals. Marcin Cieslak (Poland) and Bradley Ally (Barbados) did not qualify. Their Olympics are over as well.
Jemma Lowe (UK) earned the eighth spot in the final of the women's 200 fly.
In the women's 4x200 free relay, Melania Costa-Schmid (Spain) did not qualify for finals, missing out by three hundredths of a second.
In the women's 200 breast, Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir (Iceland) and Sarra Lajnef (Tunisia) did not qualify for semifinals.
Former Gator Clark Burckle qualified with the sixth-fastest time in the 200 breast and will be swimming in the finals this afternoon.
Lisa Raymond returns to competition again today, with not one but TWO doubles matches. First, she will take on sixth-ranked Russia in the women's doubles quarterfinals. Then, a mere 5 hours after the first match starts, she will play a mixed-doubles match against Italy.
Finally, in women's basketball, Azania Stewart will be hoping that the third time is lucky for the UK, as they take on Russia. I gotta be honest here - I don't get how Olympic basketball works. I mean, Britain has two losses; how are they not eliminated yet? But good luck to Stewart!
