One guy did. And he did it on purpose, first in the 1950s, and then twice more in the '60s, for a total of 16 years.

Tom Neale was his name, and while he settled in for years at a time on various inhabited South Pacific islands, his dream was to live by himself on one atoll in particular: Suvarov.

This is his story. Well, excerpts from his story anyway. He published a book in 1966 called, An Island to Oneself. Pretty amazing stuff.

I wonder what it would feel like to come back to civilization after a break of say 10 years. I mean iPads and smart phones alone in the last 10 years would be pretty drastic. I guess it would suffice to say that technology itself would be pretty obviously different.
