$60 million fine, 10 initial scholarship losses and then 20 per year for four years, year four-year bowl ban, all wins since 1998 vacated.
Somewhere, Bobby Bowden is laughing, maniacally, his legacy restored.
While not literally the death penalty, these are so severe that they may as well be. Penn State can't possibly compete with only 20 scholarship players, can they?
I've got mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, what they did was deplorable, morally and ethically. But on the other hand, it wasn't cheating - why should the NCAA be involved?

Not really sure what this punishment is meant to achieve. It really only punishes the players, who had nothing to do with what happened, and the other sports, who lose the revenue football generates and who also had nothing to do with what happened.
The people who were involved are all getting punished, as they should, by the criminal system. Sandusky is never getting out of prison and the admins who covered it up probably won't either.
But I guess that's par for the course for the NCAA. The people who pay the price for wrongdoing are usually people who had nothing to do with it.

I think it's 20 schollys over 4 years, not 20 a year.
Four-year scholarship reduction (10 initial; 20 total)
Still pretty harsh penalty for the players at the school who didn't have anything to do with this issue.

Don't you only get 25 scholarships per year anyway? So, same difference.

They will still be able to get 25 scholly players a year but they will be limited by 10 to how many they can have on scholly. So they will be at 75 for the first year and then 80 for the following four if I understand it correctly. They could still sign 25 but be at or under 75. A scholly level of 75 is pretty harsh. It is similar to how deep, or the lack of depth that UF has had recently.

After hearing more, you might be right in how many they can sign a year.

I agree with a1 and Doc. For all intents and purposes, Penn State is finished as a football team for at least the next 10 years. Look at SMU - it still hasn't fully recovered. Back in the day it was one of the best in the old SWC. I don't even know what conference it is in now.

Ivan Maisel for ESPN wrote a good article today about the punishment. I cannot stand the NCAA, bunch of hypocrites.

Yeah, the current players are getting screwed. I think they should have left them eligible for bowl play but split the revenue amongst the other big 10 schools (except tOSU, because, well, fuck tOSU).

I for one think it's a slap on the wrist. The NCAA may be hypocrites and leeches. But here they were gutless. The punishments are minor. The $60 million they're paying out of rainy-day funds. The scholarships -- pfft. They didn't even get banned from TV.
