That sounds like 1 of 2 things:

1. Taylor knew things about a shady character from his past and they were spooked by something; or
2. Straight burglary, but maybe looking for something specific? Knife on the pillow to throw off the scent dogs?

The world is a sketchy place, regardless.

might the kitchen knife have been the tool used to pry open the front window and accidentally left in a hasty departure? or if it was from the house, a tool used to pry open drawers or safe? dunno but something is rotten in Denmark with whole thing.
