I remember UM's first press conference...I knew right then he was going to do well here. And I was sad about SOS too, but part of me really didn't want him back...you can just never go back, ya know?

I didn't want Spurrier back. He is the greatest coach Florida's ever had and probably will ever have. He built the Cadillac that Urban Meyer is driving. But I didn't think he was the best guy for the job that opened up when Zook was canned.

He hadn't looked happy since the day Danny Wuerffel graduated. I think the only QB he truly liked in the post-Danny years was Noah Brindise, because only Brindise overachieved in Spurrier's eyes. All those other guys came in to a world of praise, turned into good but not great college QBs, and only Rex ever lived up to his rep.

I thought then and I still think now that Spurrier had made the job into something he didn't want anymore. He didn't want to have to defend and salvage a season where he went 11-2. He likes his golf; he likes his sleep. He likes to coach. He doesn't want to be Jesus. At Florida, we had come to want, need, and expect Jesus.

Toothy, you are so right. And I can say from the little Bill's dad will tell me about him that you are right on the money about why he really didn't want to come back. Everyone at that time when Zook left, seemed to conveniently forget about how unhappy he was towards the end and how it reflected on his recruiting, coaching and everything.

One thing I noticed was going to one of his last coaches clinics before SOS left...I remember thinking it was a pretty good clinic (but I had never been to one before). Then I went to one of the clinics that Urban Meyer hoseted and WOW, what a difference. He got those high school coaches totally pysched and it was really evident how happy he was to be at UF. Bill said as we watched him talk about special teams in a small grounp "man, I feel like I'm ready to go play now!". UM has a true passion for college football and I think embraced all that came with it. At least for now...it's only a matter of time before he gets sick of it too...that's the nature of coaching.
