Let the insanity begin

With UK losing last night to the Domer's the speculation that Billy G has been let go started to go into overdrive. The usual cast of characters names are being thrown around. So get ready to hear the names of Calipari, Donovan, and yes even Rick Pitino being tossed around. I am starting to understand the whole "UK fans are nuts" statement. This is going to be interesting.

So much talk of BD going to UK. I'd be pissed if he did.

does anyone think he would? i'd be really surprised... he could have gone there two years ago if he wanted to and I can't imagine Jeremy Foley allowing $ to be an issue.

Billy Donovan has been allowed to be pretty average in most of his years at UF, including the last two. Nobody's calling for his head. That's a damn good reason to stay in Gainesville.

I'd basically want to be Jesus before I took the UK job.

Speaking of which, Joey, just how does it look to you for Kentucky to be sniffing around Calipari? He's only 50, that's upside. He could coach there 15-20 years.

The Tubby Smith firing, to look back, was badly timed. That Gillispie thing was embarrassing from beginning to end.

Its starting to look like Calipari might be coming. I think it would be a great hire as long as he is clean. UK cant go anywhere near someone that even remotely is dirty. UK has been on probation too many times in the past. Tubby wasn't fired, he was run out of town but officially he resigned. He got the same size contract at Minny as he did at UK and UK even paid out on a 1.7 million dollar loyalty clause. Also one thing about Tubby was he wanted to bring Saul on as an Assistant. First UK has a nepotism rule and second he would have really be persecuted for that one.
Gillispie was just a bad hire overall. UK's AD did a real bad vetting job on that one. I think once it got to the point where his first choice(Billy D) shot him down he became frantic. I don't think Mitch wanted the basketball hire to go down the same way the football hiring went down a few years before when he settled on his 6th choice ,Rich Brooks. I think I read somewhere the first time they ever talked to Gillispie was 24 hours before they introduced him as coach. Your right it was an overall embarrassment. A school like UK should never lose games to a VMI or Gardner Webb.
Calipari is going to be interesting. Year in and year out he always has a great recruiting class. He loves the spotlight and is kind of an ego-maniac like another former Italian coach we had that did pretty well. Also for some reason Calipari and Pitino have some kind of rivalry. That would put the UK-UL game back in the national spotlight. I think UK had to go out and hit a homerun and with this one if it happens I think they did that. I just thought of all the coach's in the SEC and it is going to rival the names in football I believe. Last week I was just happy the season was over and today if this really does happen I already can't wait for Midnight Madness.

Oh, yeah, man, the UK/UL game is gonna be nuclear with those two.

Sixth choice or not -- and I remember plenty of people scoffing at the hire -- Rich Brooks didn't work out that bad, did he?

Rich hasn't done bad at all. The beginning was rough but UK has made a bowl game for 3 straight years for the first time since Bear Bryant was coaching at UK. What I like the most is that they are always competitive for the most part. I remember going to watch the Gators play UK in the Swamp with Spurrier and the 73-7 games. Yuck.

I thought Calipari stayed at Memphis all these years cause he could get away with dirty recruiting (or at least getting recruits that couldn't be as easily admitted to 'major' programs)? If he's clean, good luck to him. The SEC is more difficult than Conference USA (yeah, so we had a down year, whatever ;) )

God I hope UK isn't on probation in 3 years but other than that I am excited as hell. Coach Cal is a great hire. I think he has the personality to deal with all the nutballs (UK fans) and I am think its safe to say the man can recruit. I think the SEC will be back on the upswing and I cant wait for the UK-UL game next year. GO BIG BLUE

Yeah. I wonder if this is gonna be good for Billy D in the long run. We loved beating up UK for a few years, but it's a long way from being a rivalry. Now Calipari raises the stakes. I hope Donovan takes this as a challenge and responds in kind. It would be lovely to see a UK resurgence as a chance to rise above the rest of the SEC -- the way that UT followed UF up in football for a few years, till Phil's sugar buzz ran out.
