It's true WP...even if your guy isn't going to win, it's important to show your opinion by voting because at least you will show to the winner that your voice has support too and he better not ignore it if he wins. That's my opinion anyway.

I took Lainie to a Palin rally here in Kissimmee yesterday. It was cool. I'm glad she got to experience something like that. I got my GATORS for McCain/Palin shirt and it says "Don't Tax Me Bro" with the Obama "seal" as the O in Bro. Funny. Maybe it'll be a collectors item someday?

It probably won't be a collector's item, but it is funny.

Do you plan on taking her to an Obama/Biden rally, as well?

Nope but I doubt they'll come to Kissimmee anyway. Plus, she gets to watch half hour infomercials for Obama if she wants to. She's actually been for McCain since last year...really, before I was totally sold on him.

I did my civic duty and voted this morning. Early voting was much easier. It took me about 10 minutes and that was having to do a change of address while standing in line.

It took me about the same amount of time. I'll never understand people who are willing to wait in line for three hours. I don't care how large of a city you live in, there are always times that you can be in and out in less than 20 minutes. The only way I'd stand in line for more than that is if I lived in a very rural area and drove almost an hour just to vote...that, or if I waited until the very last minute and was forced to stand in line if I wanted to cast my vote.

^^^Ricky, I 100% CONCUR!!! I feel this way about almost everything though...I will NOT wait in line unless I am forced to. It's one of the many reasons I love the internet...shopping online has made me even more impatient. :lol:

I think they said that some of the early voting places in Florida had up to a 5 hour wait. That is crazy.

I think we should have voting restrictions.

I have yet to come up with the perfect solution as to how, though. However, I am working on it.

I agree with Jimmy. The idea of every citizen in America possessing the right to vote is preposterous to me as a practical matter. Of course, if I had my way the government would have probably 15% of the current power anyway, so it would be less of an issue.

That just blows my mind... What kind of restrictions should we have? Poll Tax? Literacy Test? I think we've tried that before...

As for a your thoughts on disenfranchisement as practical matter, AA, what's practical about eliminating certain people from the voter rolls? How the hell could you do it systematically, and without regard to racial/class factors?

I wish I could vote now. My county is majority black, and our voting machine situation will be terrible compared to the very wealthy county next door. My parents in Michigan voted yesterday. I wish I could too.

I think a Literacy/competency test would be outstanding. Keep in mind, I'm not looking for Political/Historical Experts, but basic competency. For instance, if you can't tell me what the three branches of government are, you shouldn't vote. If you can't tell me how many terms a President can serve (and/or how many years are in a term), you shouldn't vote. That kind of knowledge would eliminate about 20-25% of the current voters, and I'd almost bet that number is on the low side.

BTW, just because the SCOTUS has shot this kind of restriction down in the past, doesn't mean it wasn't a good idea then, and it doesn't mean it's not a good idea now.

haven't voted yet. Can't even get in the parking lots of the early voting places here. I figure there won't be many folks left by the time the actual voting occurs, so I'll wait patiently till Nov 4.

at least maybe they'll learn something. It should be several basic questions like that:

how old do you have to be to be eligible to serve as President? Senator? Representative?

How long is the term of a Supreme Court Justice? How many Justices are there?

How many amendments are there in the Original "Bill of Rights"?

How many Senators does each state have?

etc.

my friend is running a polling place and said she receive things in Japanese, Tagalog and Spanish. I'm all for everyone voting, but I do think the minimum requirement should be English-only. It may make me a bad person, but if you can't read "McCain" vs "Obama" and punch a hole or fill in a bubble, how are you a citizen anyway?

Hater, it'd be great if people were more aware of basic civics, but do you realize just how many people aren't? Isn't it Leno who used to ask questions like that on the street and get all sorts of blank stares? I won't get on my soapbox about how education in this country is slip sliding away.

i've met quite a few 4 to 5 generation americans who can't speak proper english.....and then there's the former ESL'ers i've met who have impeccable vocabularies....i don't think english literacy is the answer.

we do require photo ID, is that not national? I don't care if people have a grasp of proper grammar and don't think a test is required. I just think reading the ballot is pretty basic.
