i was watching the olympic trials and saw phleps break the world record. a gator was on his tail the whole time and even beating him for a little while before the last turn. big congrats to ryan lochte! [img]{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif[/img]

i'll definitely be looking for him during the olympics. i'm not a huge fan of swimming but it was a fun race to watch.

Doc, what are your thoughts on that new Speedo suit he's wearing. not cheating but at what point is it an aide? in the article i read this morning he even was quoted as saying he thought the suit gave him a couple of tenths.

if not for Phelps, Lochte would be the World Record Holder...he actually beat the mark in that race as well, but Phelps got him.

I'll watch swimming in the Olympics especially when there are UF folks swimming.

Swimming, to me, is still one of the pure Olympic events...pure individual effort that so far has been untainted by performance enhancing drugs (unlike track and field and weightlifting). I'm likely being naive about it though.

It certainly is better than the non-sports of the Olympics that have judges determining who is the winner...diving, figure skating, gymnastics. I'm not saying these folks aren't in incredible shape but I don't think it's a sport if scoring is determined by a judge instead of say crossing a line or making a goal...

I saw a football game like that...happened in 2003. Some of y'all probably saw it, too. It had to have been on a judged basis, because it certainly wasn't based on how it was played on the field.

I'm with you on that one, Hater. I was playing a UF football trivia game and got a question along the lines of "How many times did Chris Leak beat FSU?" My first response was "Four times, bitches!"

Late to the party:

Phelps is an incredible athlete. No one has dominated swimming like he has.

The new suit is definitely a factor, it's been tested repeatedly. But if just about everyone uses them, then no one has an "unfair" advantage.

As for doping in swimming, I like to think that it's rare, at least in the USA. Having been around a lot of Olympic-caliber swimmers in my day, the controls are pretty tight. Anyone who competes internationally gets randomly tested during the season, not to mention tests at competitions.

That said, a few folks have been busted over the years. Angel Martino comes to mind, and I think Christina Teuscher got accused but exonerated a few years back.
