SEC East Tiebreaking Scenarios

Post by IHateUGAlyDawgs »

Yes, this is how I've occupied my time at work today...

Anyway...

All of this assumes UF wins its remaining two SEC game with Vandy and S.Carolina pushing both teams to at least 4 conference losses and out of the race.

UF will finish with a 5-3 record.

UGA stands at 4-2 currently with games against UK and Auburn.

UT stands at 3-2 currently with games against Arky, UK, and Vandy.

UK stands at 2-3 currently with games against Vandy, UGA, and UT.

In a two way tie between UF and UGA, UF loses out based on head-to-head.

In a two way tie with UF and either UK or UT, UF wins based on head-to-head.

In a three way (or more) tie here are the scenarios:
1. (Once the tie has been reduced to two teams, go to the two-team tie-breaker format.)
2. Combined head-to-head record among the tied teams.
3. Record of the tied teams within the division.
4. Head-to-head competition vs. the team within the division with the best overall (divisional and non-divisional) Conference record and proceeding through the division. Multiple ties within the division will be broken from first to last.
5. Overall record vs. non-division teams.
6. Combined record vs. all common non-divisional teams.
7. Record vs. common non-divisional team with the best overall Conference (divisional and non-divisional) record and proceeding through other common non-divisional teams based on their order of finish within their division.
8. The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games shall be the divisional representative in the SEC Championship Game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the SEC Championship Game.
If UT and UGA both lose one more game (at this point assume UK drops one more to be out of the race w/ 4 losses - hang in there Joe, I'm getting to you guys), then there is a three way tie between UF, UT, and UGA at 5-3.

The combined head to head record between each of these teams is tied all the way around at 1-1. So move on to #3. UF's record in the division would be 5-1 (loss to UGA). UT's record would be 5-1 (loss to UF). UGA's record would be 4-2 (losses to UT and USC). This would eliminate UGA and leave us with UF and UT. UF wins in the head-to-head two team tiebreaker.

If UT and UGA both lose with UT's loss coming to UK (still assume UK loses another one - to Vandy for instance) the UF wins outright on the divisional record (5-1 to 4-2 to 4-2).

If UK wins out (assume UT and UGA both win their other games) then there is a four way tie: UF, UK, UGA, and UT at 5-3. In this scenario the head to head records are: UF 2-1, UK 2-1, UT 1-2, UGA 1-2. UT and UGA are eliminated and UF beats out UK in a two team head to head tiebreaker.

Essentially, UF owns all tie-breakers assuming we win out and UT and UGA both drop one.

For UK they have to win out and have UF drop one. UK would have the head to head over both UT and UGA in this scenario.

I was thinking about this the other day Joey...how crappy it is for you that UK picks THIS year of all years to be good...the SEC east is just really sort of equal this year. I mean, if UK had been good maybe 10 years ago, it would have been UT, UF and UK fighting it out for the east champ...now it's just everyone!!!! Poor Joey! But BB season is just around the corner!

As for Ihates conclusions...I'll think about that 1. AFTER and IF we beat Vandy and 2. AFTER and IF we beat USEeast.
Okay, let's try this!

I just realized I didn't come up w/ a scenario of a three way tie between UF, UK, and UGA. UF still wins out on the Division Record tiebreaker.

So Ihate, I was thinking about this this weekend...yes, I know I said I wouldn't...so sue me. Anyway, can UGA lose to Auburn or do they have to lose to UK (if they only lose one)? I know that Auburn is a west team and it would likely be MORE helpful if they lost to UK right? Or does it really only matter if UT drops one or two? I'm confused.

It looks like I just need to root for Auburn and whoever UT is playing this weekend right? And then as long as we beat USCeast, we're golden right? I want it all to be over this weekend...I know, I can dream can't I?

It does not matter, m7. UGA already has 2 division losses (S.Carolina and UT) - so we just need them to lose A game...doesn't matter which one.

just root for UGA to lose. simple as that this weekend. then let the chips fall where they may.

funny how the ut-uk game could very well determine whether it's uga or uf in atlanta.

OK. It is this Simple. Root for both Vandy and UK this weekend. If they both win then we all have 3 losses (UF, UK, UGA, and UT).

In that situation, the UK v. UT game would be irrelevant as whoever won would produce a three way tie with UK/UT, UF, UGA and UF wins out.

Go Big Blue!

because UT wins the tie in with uga, so that eliminates them and we win the tie breaker vs. UT so we would be in.

Not likely, it is Kentucky after all.....But hey, at least they got Patrick Patterson.

Actually TT is not quite clear...if you ready Jimmy's original post, in a three way tie they consider who has the most "SEC East wins"...two of our three losses were to West teams and two of the three losses for UT and UGA would be (assuming UK wins) against "east teams". So that is why UF would get the nod in a three way tie.
Okay, let's try this!

If I was a gator fan this weekend I wouldn't hold my breath. Weirder things have happened but if UK doesn't play any better than they did on Saturday everyone on this board is screwed. UK's offensive line has gotten worse and the defense can't stop the run to save their lives. Maybe the defense that played against McFadden in the second half will show up
