finley checks out uf/au

Post by radbag »

Auburn (Ala.) High standout Dee Finley found himself in a unique situation Saturday night.

The four-star safety, who committed to Florida this summer, was one of a number of recruits at Florida Field as the Gators hosted Auburn in a key SEC battle.

A last-second field goal gave Auburn a 20-17 upset win over then-No. 4 Florida.

"I was rooting for Florida but when Auburn did something good, I'm just a football fan," said Finley. "I was impressed with how Auburn came out. They played hard. It's the SEC. You can't predict SEC games."

Finley was also impressed with the atmosphere in the Swamp.

"I had a blast," he said. "Except for the loss, everything went good.

"I couldn't even hear myself think. It was a great atmosphere. It was so much fun."

Finley said a highlight of the trip was being a part of Florida's pregame preparations and spending time with UF assistant Chuck Heater.

"We have a great relationship," said Finley.

Florida has been keeping in close contact with Finley with calls once a week. Finley has missed several calls from AU defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

"Coach Muschamp calls every now and then but I haven't got a chance to talk to him yet," said Finley.

Finley says he's put recruiting on the backburner as he concentrates on his grades and having a good senior season. But Finley does plan to visit some other games later this fall.

"I might swing by an Auburn game," he said. "It will have to be a good one."

While Finley says he's pretty firm in his commitment to Florida, he hasn't entirely closed the door on other schools including Auburn.

"I ain't signed anything yet but I feel pretty confident (with my decision)," he said.

Coming off a 28-7 win at Jeff Davis last Friday, Auburn (4-1) will play at Enterprise this week.

"This is the most talented team we've had since I've been there," said Finley. "I think we can do some good things if we stay together and keep playing how we're playing now.

"I think we're going to push real far in the playoffs."
