Gators in the Olympics: Day 8

Post by DocZaius »

Yesterday's swimming events were certainly exciting. Ryan Lochte ended his 2012 Olympic run with bronze medal in the 200 back and a silver in the 200 IM. Early indications were that he'd make another go of it in 2016, but for now, he'll be enjoying life in the Olympic Village.

Today's events are as follows:

Sarah Bateman (Iceland) was in a 3-way swim-off to determine who gets 16th place and a shot at the semi-finals in the women's 50 free.Unfortunately, she lost the swim-off and didn't make the semi-finals.

Gemma Spofforth and Jemma Lowe (UK) advanced to finals in the women's 400 medley relay, however Melania Costa-Schmid (Spain), Sarah Bateman (Iceland) and Hilda Luthersdottir (Iceland) did not make the cut.

Elizabeth Beisel and incoming freshman Sinead Russell will compete in the finals of the 200 backstroke. Beisel is expected to challenge for the podium.

Track and field events begin today. In the men's 400 meter hurdles, Kerron Clement advanced to the semi-finals with the second-fastest qualifying time. In the women's 400 meter dash, Novlene Williams-Mills (Jamaica) won her heat to advance to the semi-finals.

In the men's shot-put, Kemal Mesic (Bosnia) failed to qualify for the finals.

Will Clay
will attempt to qualify for further competition in the long jump this afternoon.

In women's soccer, Abby Wambach continued her scoring streak, contributing one goal in the United States' 2-0 victory over New Zealand. Heather Mitts did not play.

This afternoon, Mel Booth will play on the Canadian soccer team in the quarterfinals vs. Great Britain.

Azania Stewart and the British basketball team faces France later today.

Finally, in women's doubles tennis, Lisa Raymond and her partner, Liezel Huber got defeated by the Czech Republic. They will next compete in a bronze medal match, against a to-be-determined opponent. In addition, Raymond will continue to compete in mixed doubles.

Gators in the Olympics: Day 8

I think I'd rather be a swimmer in these Olympics for the simple fact that you can get your shit out of the way in the first week and really "enjoy" the village the second week. If you're track and field you have to play it a little more light before all of your events the first week and then you have to compete the second week. No real time to blow it out.
Can I borrow your towel? My car just hit a water buffalo.

Alls I know is Bron Bron and the rest of the men's basketball team better kick it in gear--only beating teams by 83 points is slacking.

And go Flying Squirrel!
