The fact that [Phelps] doesn't have to work as hard to get that done, it's a real shame. I think it's too bad. You see that all too often, where you get athletes that are incredibly talented that really take it for granted. I think the things he could have done if he'd worked as hard as I do would have been even more incredible than what he has pulled off.
Basically, he was a swimmer that didn't want to be [at practice.] They can talk about all of these goals and plans and preparation they have. I saw it. I know. It's different. And I saw somebody that has basically been asking to get beat for the longest time.
Message for Clary: Phelps worked plenty hard in his career - especially prior to 2008. True, he took some time off after Beijing but he got back in shape enough to kick your ass, and everyone else's (except for Lochte in that one race). Is he talented? Yeah, but so are you. Nobody gets to be that dominant by being lazy.
I believe the phrase is hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. I have a feeling that Phelps works hard when it's time to.
“The Knave abideth.” I dare speak not for thee, but this maketh me to be of good comfort; I deem it well that he be out there, the Knave, being of good ease for we sinners.
I only heard about this because one of Jim Rome's callers brought it up. People gonna tune in to this kid's races now, just to see Phelps whip his ass. Good for him.
Tyler's gonna get his chance to put his money where his mouth is. He and Phelps are probably both going to qualify for the finals in the 200 fly.
Phelps had pretty darn good split in the 4x100 free relay - he went faster than he did in 2008. I don't know what happened in his 400 IM, but it's way too soon to be counting him out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Phelps come close to his world record in this race.
