First National Championship since 1982. This has been a long-time in coming. We were fucking dominant back in the 1980s (the men, too), but then coach Randy Reese left, and the women's team was rocked with scandal. Coach Mitch Ivey had inappropriate relationships with his swimmers (I have personally confirmed this to be true from some of the swimmers on the team) and resigned under a cloud. We went through a number of coaches, each of whom initially appeared promising, but could never quite bring us back to the promised land.
Finally, Gregg Troy accepted the job a few years ago and began the rebuilding process. Coach Troy had previously been the coach of the most dominant club and prep school program in the nation (nay, the world!) - The Bolles School, in Jacksonville. I know he had been offered the UF job before, but he finally accepted it as the most logical next step in a very successful career.
This looks like a hard-fought victory, but I'm hoping it will result in a new era of swimming at Florida. Go Gators!
Also, we could use a new pool. The O'Dome was once a state-of-the-art facility, and in fact hosted some National Championship meets back in the early '80s, but by modern standards it is woefully inadequate for hosting large events. The pools are still okay, but if you want to attract the best athletes, you gotta come up with better facilities.
