SEC Refs admit mistake in UF/Ark game

Post by G8rMom7 »

Bill mentioned to me on Saturday a bad bad call against Arky in the drive when Demps scored. At this point I wasn't watching...but Bill said our guy just got pwned but the refs called it as a late hit or something like that. In any case, it's hard to tell whether that would have changed things but since it was such a close game, it is always a possibility. I laughed at some of the comments under the article....

It sure is nice to be on the side of getting the calls every once in a while.

I wondered for a second if the flag wasn't for the little taunt after the hit...but if it was for the little taunt, I guess it would have been unsportsmanlike conduct.

^^^ Yeah, I think the ref could have made an unsportsmanlike conduct call, but it clearly wasn't a late hit or other personal foul.

Agreed...def wasn't a late hit/PF.

On a related subject, I have read several non-UF folks bitching about the Tebow rules -- how he overcelebrates everything and never gets flagged.

Discuss.

I don't think Tebow "overcelebrates." He's animated, sure, but it's pretty clear that he's trying to motivate his teammates, and not draw attention to himself. As far as I can tell, they usually don't flag small "team" celebrations.

I think they're a bit overzealous with celebration penalties, anyway.

i just think the celebration penalties we saw at the LSU game were a bit 'overzealous' (as Z puts it) with the second one being called as more of a 'make up' call to help wash the penalties.

that said, everything is now being compared to those 'quick' calls when they shouldn't be because those LSU penalties shouldn't have been called to begin with.

I agree that the celebration penalties are excessive.

DocZ, I tend to agree with you: we interpret Tebow's fist-pumping and hollering as team motivation. What do you say to the first receiver who says that his posing and chest-beating in the end zone after a touchdown is similarly intended, as a motivator to all the other posers and chest-beaters on his squad? Because there's a legitimate argument to be made there -- that we (and referees) go for a certain sort of old-school gesturing (read tougher; read Tebow; read white) and penalize a sort of new-school gesturing (read showboaty; read Terrell Owens, etc.; read black).

In short: while I agree with you, I am troubled because I think the defense of Tebow's celebrations is relatively weak and depends on interpretation. We interpret generously for that kid, with his mission work and the circumcisions and the way that God smiles every time 15 lowers his helmet.

I offer this cautiously, realizing some of us might take offense: When some base colored fellow from another team lets it hang out in the end zone or after a sack, are we as quick to apply the biography to rationalize how this is within the rules? I am not sure we do. I am not sure I do.

I think these rules are BS, but as long as they're rules, they ought to be evenly applied.

They've flagged Tebow in the past for this. At LSU no less, right? Didn't he get the flag in '07 for the phone pantomime after one touchdown?

Tebow got one (taunting I believe) against OU in Miyamu

Black people celebrate touchdowns like this, but white people celebrate like this.

i like tebow's celebrating and TO's. so long as it's not taunting, boring celebration, i like it. i especially enjoy the creative celebrations. it's a game. it's entertainment!

in short, toothy's got it.

There's no clearer example of things having gone wrong than the fact that spiking the football now brings a penalty. Spiking the football!

Walter Payton spiked the football. John Stallworth spiked the football.

That's all I got.

as far as I'm concerned with celebration, as long as it isn't direct taunting of players (don't give a shit if the fans get taunted), or excessively long (for example: doing some breakdance for a full 30 seconds to a minute), then I don't really give a damn what they do. It's to score a TD. It's hard to get a sack. You should be pumped up with energy/emotion when you achieve one or the other.
